Position Overview:

Under direction of the Principal (Public Service Administrator), performs professional library duties in the institutional library. Ensures access to library and/or library services, and adequate staffing of the library to maintain service hours. Examines, interprets, fills user requests for materials using the institutional library or through interlibrary loan. Performs library operations such as circulation, filing, shelving, and shelf reading. Maintains and develops the library collection. Performs elementary bibliographic searches. Promotes library services by preparing programs, poster displays, bulletin boards, and new book lists.

Ensures access to library and/or library services, and adequate staffing of the library to maintain service hours.

  • Maintains library order and security.
  • Provides reader advisory and limited reference service to library patrons.
  • Assists by locating books and periodicals.
  • Explains library facilities and services.
  • Charges/discharges library materials.
  • Maintains circulation records.
  • Issues overdue notices.

Examines, interprets, fills user requests for materials using the institutional library or through interlibrary loan.

  • Photocopies print materials according to Departmental policy.
  • Picks up and delivers requests/materials needed to provide service to confined residents.

  • Ensures adequate supplies and space is available.

Maintains and develops the library collection.

  • Reviews catalogues or publications, selecting books and periodicals of value to library patrons.
  • Orders, receives, catalogs, and processes library materials.
  • Repairs damaged library materials.
  • Inventories library collection.

Performs elementary bibliographic searches.

  • Prepares bibliographies on subjects not requiring extensive research; assists users by locating material on specific subjects.

Promotes library services by preparing programs, poster displays, bulletin boards, and new book lists.

  • Prepares reports on library activities; attends staff meetings, training, and serves on institution committees as required.

Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):

  1. Prefers working knowledge or standard library methods and procedures.
  2. Prefers ability to select and recommend publications of interest to the patrons of the library and to assist patrons in utilizing the library facilities.
  3. Prefers ability to prepare and maintain circulation and catalog files and to prepare ordinary reports on library activities.
  4. Prefers ability to perform incidental typing.
  5. Prefers college courses in library science.

Conditions of Employment:

  1. Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  2. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  3. Requires the ability to comply with all local and federal health requirements and/or mandates.

The mission of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is to build youth skills and strengthen families by promoting community safety and positive youth outcomes. Over 900 staff members from across various departments—security, programming, education, mental health, and more—collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency,
engages families and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois’ communities.
