Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as a Stationary Fireman to work at Stateville Correctional Center. The ideal candidate is a team player, task oriented and shows great attention to detail. This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility’s powerhouse. Duties include operating and maintaining boilers and furnaces. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply. Job Responsibilities
- Operates and maintains the facility’s powerhouse on assigned shift.
- Conducts area checks to ensure safety and sanitary conditions of the power plant follow established standards for the agency and institution as well as federal and state standards for the operation of the boilers.
- Prepares and submits daily reports to supervisor regarding the operation of the powerhouse and work not yet completed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight (8) years elementary school.
- Requires two (2) years of experience in the operation of high-pressure stationary boilers.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience maintaining and operating boilers, vacuums, circulating pumps, water softeners and coal conveyors.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience reading gauges on high pressure stationary boilers and making appropriate adjustments.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in the maintenance and cleaning of high-pressure stationary boilers.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in blowing down boilers and drums.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience calculating natural gas and water consumption.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience collecting data and compiling usage reports.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience, both independently and collaboratively, solving complex technical issues.
