Overview:
The purpose of this position is to manage the procurement of goods from assigned vendors so that American Paper & Twine Company achieves the highest service level possible to our customers and maintains the most efficient inventory investment. Additionally, this position must be able to effectively communicate with vendors, company managers, employees, and customers.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain inventories for all divisions at a level to improve turns and fill rate levels yet still give the highest possible level of customer service.
- Responsible for monitoring both inventory min/max levels and inventory management and planning (IM&P) forecast to determine inventory and re-order levels.
- Maintain current pricing and product information.
- Negotiate pricing, rebates, growth incentives, and marketing efforts with the Category Manager approval.
- Review stock on hand on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Perform centralized purchases when vendor minimums are not met.
- Evaluate and analyze item duplicity and provide recommendations for phase-outs.
- Work closely with Category Manager in evaluating best practices for optimal inventory turns.
- Analyze and make recommendations to Category Manager when analyzing freight costs, transfers, ship direct opportunities, and/or pick up allowances.
- Utilize good judgment in purchasing practices and make needed process improvement recommendations to Category Manager.
- Work with current and potentially new vendors to source new products as needed.
- Evaluate and assess carrying costs versus order and stock out costs.
- Verify cost on special order items prior to placing purchase orders with vendors.
- Manage the overstock on all lines assigned for all divisions.
- Follow-up on vendor backorders in a timely manner.
- Manage returns on slow or non-moving inventory.
- Communicate vendor performance issues to Category managers in a timely manner.
- Maintain the highest level of integrity when negotiating or discussing business with vendors.
- Maintain timely and thorough communication with Warehouse and Sales Managers at all divisions to understand the exact product needs of the warehouse and its limitations.
- Develop strong working relationships and work closely with vendors, sales force, and customer service.
- Develop and manage reports as needed or requested.
- A minimum of two years of experience in purchasing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to professionally interact with a wide range of key executive members and purchasing staff.
- Strong analytical skills with a solid proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Impeccable mathematical skills with the ability to perform statistical operations.
- Self-motivated with the ability to follow through on assignments with little supervision.
- Capable of assimilating information quickly and reaching conclusions.
- Previous AS400 experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
