The Instructional Technology Consultant acts as a resource in the design and development of instructional technology services for the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning director, faculty, and staff at IU Columbus. This position provides professional client support through evidence-based, informed consulting practice, workshop facilitation, and project management. Further, the Instructional Technology Consultant serves as an expert resource, remaining current with the literature about the use and assessment of instructional strategies not limited to but focused on instructional technologies in higher education. This includes current and emerging technologies related to learning management systems, active learning classrooms (and supporting technologies), electronic collaboration and social networking, e-Portfolios, instructional use of multimedia, electronic conferencing, and online instruction. Additionally, the Instructional Technology Consultant collaborates on larger university-wide initiatives and working groups to support the mission of Indiana University, UITS strategic IT initiatives, and the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Helps faculty members make evidence-based decisions about the use of technology by referencing and providing them with relevant scholarly literature.
  • Conducts individual, small group, and large audience training sessions.
  • Supports faculty-learning communities for key instructional technology initiatives.
  • Identifies and applies emerging instructional technology and design approaches for the IU Columbus campus that will affect both students and faculty.
  • Takes a lead role in consulting with faculty and instructor clients.
  • Contributes to initiatives and working groups that support the mission of the IU Columbus Center for Teaching and Learning as well as UITS strategic IT initiatives.
  • Makes independent decisions and will be using their own judgment and expertise, within the scope of the mission, and the guidelines and charge of the immediate supervisor/program director.
  • Helps guide instructional technology decisions, policies, and best practices for the IU Columbus campus.

General Responsibilities

  • Consults and serves as an experienced resource in planning, testing and implementing instructional technology projects that support innovative approaches to learning, instructional and assessment.
  • Maintains currency on emerging technologies related to learning management systems, active learning classrooms, electronic collaboration and social networking, instructional use of multimedia, electronic conferencing and online instruction to help faculty make evidence-based decisions about the use of technology.
  • Researches, stays up-to-date, and recommends appropriate technologies for developing materials, delivery mechanisms and course/instructor/student assessments to support effective teaching.
  • Develops and designs workshop materials that promote technology strategies in traditional and online courses and conducts individual, group and large audience training sessions.
  • Collaborates in larger initiatives and working groups to support university efforts to improve teaching and learning.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, instructional technology/design, or related field.

Preferred

  • Master's degree or higher.

Required

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 2 years of experience in instructional development and/or instructional technology consulting, and/or training, and/or teaching (face-to-face or online) or providing instructional design with online instructional technology, preferably in a higher education context.

  • Ability to present and interact with people in a group, presentation, or workshop setting with audiences which possess varying degrees of technical knowledge.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation. The person in this role must be customer service and problem-solving oriented, with superior ability to work as part of a team.
