Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities:
The Career Services Leader supports the department’s primary mission which is to help students and alumni identify career opportunities and find meaningful employment. This individual must possess exceptional communication, advising, listening, writing and editing skills. We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic, creative, cooperative individual who is able to work with minimal supervision and with a variety of people groups. In this role, the individual will facilitate linkages with business/industry, post-secondary institutions, and community organizations to support students’ transition to post-secondary education and employment.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the Office of Career Services including: training, supervision, and evaluation of professional and student staff; and the development and implementation of departmental objectives.
- Develop career readiness skills of current students and alumni through career assessments, exploration, decision-making, goal setting, and planning; resume building, interview skill development, mock interviews, and job search preparation and navigation; graduate school application and interview preparation through counseling appointments and consultations.
- Work collaboratively with campus stakeholders (i.e. External Affairs, academic deans) to develop relationships with potential and existing employers that will facilitate maximum recruitment of IUE students and graduates.
- Oversee internships and pre-professional observations: track student hours, counsel students for quality placements, and communicate with students, faculty, and sponsors; build partnerships locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally for students.
- Maintain and update Handshake software program, including reviewing and approving student resumes and employer job postings.
- Collaborate cross-functionally (i.e. Marketing and Communications, academic departments, etc.) to ensure career services programs and materials are aligned with campus strategy; consult with employers regarding optimal marketing strategies to connect students to internships and jobs and to collaborate on events and workshops.
- Direct the collection, maintenance, and reporting of relevant data, and implement departmental assessment; leverage collected data (e.g., student retention, student satisfaction surveys, student graduation rates, graduate surveys, etc.) to improve career services processes.
- Plan and promote career fairs, on-campus recruiting opportunities for employers and other career-related events.
- Perform other duties incidental to those described above and as assigned by the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement.
General Responsibilities:
- Provides day-to-day operational management of career services staff.
- Establishes short-term operational objectives.
- Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
- Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
- Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
- Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
- Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve career services operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
- Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry career services standards, best practices, and emerging technology; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in business, counseling, or a related field.
Preferred
- Master's degree in a related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years in career services, business, human resources, counseling, or a related field.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
