General Job Description
- Prepare compounded medications while under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist
Essential Job Functions
- Enter and maintain inventory into the computer system.
- Have an understanding of inventory goals which include turnover rate, minimum quantity needed to reorder and methods required for low inventory
- Order, label and count stock of medication, chemicals, compounded items, and supplies.
- “Checks-in” orders correctly-knows to contact person in charge if there are backorders
- Stock medications correctly-making sure medications that require a special environment are met such as refrigerated medications
- Retain proper storage and security environments for drugs.
- Understands the procedure for drug recalls
- Monitors proper drug storage conditions
- Maintain and merchandise over-the-counter medications, products and supplies. Administrative tasks*
- Understand basic policy and procedures
- Able to differentiate between pharmacist and technician responsibilities
- Respects patient’s confidentiality- follow Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
- Able to interact with other health professionals and customers
- Participate in customer service
- Answer and screen telephones calls, addressing questions or requests when proper.
- Displays proper phone etiquette

- Triage incoming orders
- Assist customers by answering simple questions, finding items, or referring them to the pharmacist for medication information.
- Establish and maintain patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients. Compounding*
- Medication formulations include but are not limited to the following:
- Rotate through all work areas of the compounding laboratory/pharmacy
- Demonstrates an awareness of the responsibility of his or her position under the law, within the pharmacy, and as it relates to the pharmacy’s practice of compounding, including all state and national laws, regulations, and standards
- Strong mathematical computation skills required
- Obtain written prescriptions or refill requests and check that information is complete and correct.
- Prepare medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Assist the pharmacist in accessing, reviewing, and processing patient records/orders in the compounding computer
- Proper use of compounding equipment such as balances and measuring devices, including procedures for choosing the appropriate measuring devices, limitations of weighing equipment and measuring apparatus and the significance of accuracy in measurements.
- Use of pharmaceutical techniques that essential to preparing compounds (for example, comminution, trituration, levigation, geometric dilution and pulverization by intervention)
- Measure, mix, count, label and record quantities of dosages of medications.
- Formula preparation and packaging of prescription orders
- Fill bottles with the correct, prescribed medications and type and affix labels.
- Mix pharmaceutical preparations according to written prescriptions (compounding).
Oral solutions, troches, lollipops, lip balms, capsules, creams, ointments, lotions, rectal suppositories, ear drops and animal treats
- Operate and monitor and maintain work area and compounding equipment in a sanitary fashion including but not limited to equipment such as the ointment mill, tube sealer, electronic mortar and pestle, hot plates, electric and analytical balance, encapsulator, sieves, and glassware
- Maintain documentation as required for all prescriptions in an organized fashion
- Other possible duties
- Price and file prescriptions that have been filled.
- Prepare and process medical insurance claim forms and records.
- Operate cash registers to accept payment from customers.
- Compute charges for medication and equipment dispensed to health-system patients.
- Price stock and mark items for sale.
- Assist in training new employees
- Assist other pharmacy technicians and/or ancillary staff as necessary.
- Complete any other tasks designated by the pharmacist in charge
Attire
- Must wear clean clothing appropriate to the operation being performed.
- Must wear protective clothing such as coats, aprons, or hand/arm covering when appropriate in order to not contaminate the compounded drug
- Wearing goggles, gloves, masks or respirators, double gowns, and foot covers when working with hazardous materials.
Qualifications
High school diploma or graduate equivalent degree
Compounding technician certification preferred
Sterile processing certification certification preferred
Training and experience
1-2 years pharmacy experience preferred
Knowledge and skill
Ability to work as a team member
Good written and verbal communication skills
Basic knowledge of pharmacy practices and procedures
