Job Description : BASIC FUNCTION :

BASIC FUNCTION :

Salve Regina University seeks a Compass Advisors for its Compass Center for Advising, Career, and Life Design. Alongside a collaborative team of advising and career development specialists, the Compass Center will provide proactive, holistic, and student-centered services that prepare Salve Regina students for purposeful driven lives and meaningful careers.

The Compass Center team will play a foundational role in accompanying students through a life design process which will position students to flourish while at Salve and beyond.

Compass Advisors will serve an instrumental role in supporting first year students through their transition to Salve Regina University.

Compass Advisors are-cross-trained to support students in major exploration and academic planning. However, each Compass Advisor will specialize in supporting students in a cluster of like-majors.

Compass Advisors will support students majoring in the humanities, STEM, Business, and / or exploratory students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Utilize a comprehensive and proactive advising approach to engage assigned advisees in academic and career exploration and planning processes.
  • Collaborate closely with other Compass Center advisors to develop high-quality advising services and establish a student-centered reputation across campus.
  • Partner with faculty advisors, academic departments, and staff across the university to eliminate barriers to student success.
  • Serve as a liaison to relevant academic departments and share relevant information with other Compass advisors.
  • Serve as an instructor to assigned advisees in sections of the First Year Studios throughout fall semester.
  • Develop advising materials and presentations to support individual and group advising sessions.
  • Support the early identification of students experiencing academic difficulties or other persistence concerns and make appropriate referrals.
  • Maintain accurate and timely notes on interactions and student progress.
  • Support the new student advising and registration process prior to the fall and spring semesters.
  • Remain current on knowledge of university-wide curriculum, policies and campus resources that support student success.
  • Participate in on-going training in use of technology and data management systems that support effective advising.
  • Participate in admissions and orientation programs as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements :

Minimum Qualifications :

  • At least two years of work or education experience, preferably in higher education or career counseling.
  • Commitment to NACADA Core Values, NACE Career Readiness Competencies, Salve Regina's Mercy Mission, and an appreciation and understanding of a liberal arts education.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of student development theories and familiarity with current advising trends / best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, while maintaining a commitment to cultural competency.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills that demonstrate care, concern, and advocacy for student flourishing.
  • Capacity to utilize and learn various software applications, learning platforms, and technology-based systems.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and contribute to a team environment. Flexibility to evolve within a dynamic environment and maintain professionalism and a positive attitude during periods of high volume, intensive work.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Master's degree in higher education, counseling, human services, or a related field
  • Knowledge of integrated academic and career advising
  • Experience teaching or facilitating groups
  • Knowledge of first year student issues and advising techniques, especially for exploratory / undecided student populations.
  • Familiarity with academic, wellness, financial, and social adjustment challenges faced by diverse student populations (e.

g. low-socioeconomic status, first-generation, underrepresented students of color, and under-prepared individuals).

Experience using systems such as Colleague, Advocate, TracCloud, Microsoft Office, Qualtrics, Handshake, and Canvas.
