Weekend Facility and Program Coordinator

Department Summary

UCLA Recreation is a large department within the Division of Campus Life in Student Affairs with approximately 90 career and contract full-time employees and over 1,000 part-time employees.

UCLA Recreation provides extensive access to a broad range of recreational activities and wellbeing services, and offers programming which encompasses the competitive, passive, social, cultural, and instructional aspects of recreational activity.

In addition, the department manages 15 of the University's recreational and athletic facilities offering recreation, competition, and numerous multi-use options for student and university events.

Position Summary

Under the general direction from the Marina Aquatic Center Programs Manager, the Weekend Facility Operations and Program Coordinator supports the management and facilitation of youth and adult programs at the Marina Aquatic Center, including instructional safe boating courses, rental program, and custom group activities.

The Coordinator is responsible for the weekend operations of the Marina Aquatic Center and is required to adhere to a weekly schedule of Thursday through Monday, to supervise the facility, assess programmatic and training needs, and assist in the delivery of training to staff and volunteers.

The Coordinator will provide general weekend supervision of Marina Aquatic Center facility and programs, equipment, participants, and staff.

Their primary role is to support with the operational functions and maintain safe and proper use of MAC facilities and equipment, including assisting staff / participants in distress.

Serves as an ambassador internally and externally for the mission, values, and goals of UCLA Recreation; and provides weekend leadership on assigned initiatives.

This position facilitates space sharing of the Marina Aquatic Center with Athletics, Club Sports, the larger UCLA community, and members of the public.

Role requires the ability to utilize and manage time wisely to accomplish daily tasks and responsibilities. Supervision and direction are given by the Marina Aquatic Center Programs Manager through regular meetings, established departmental protocol and guidelines.

Incumbent is expected to work with minimal supervision and direction, in collaboration with their supervisor, the Marina Business and Administrative Supervisor, and the Marina Aquatic Center Director.

Performance will be reviewed annually and in periodic meetings as needed.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of risk management procedures, including management of Bloodborne Pathogens. (Required)
  • Swimming skills sufficient to conduct rescues (Required)
  • 1. Working knowledge of current marine aquatics safety and instruction, with knowledge of industry related risk management, program design, safety standards, techniques and regulations etc.

Excellent program execution with special attention given to risk management. (Required)

  • 2. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Aptitude and willingness to learn the technical skills needed to manage financial, point-of-sale and risk management software systems. (Required)
  • 3. Ability to supervise part-time staff; including the ability to interview, mentor, manage conflict, team build, and problem solve. (Required)
  • 5. Demonstrated skill in working independently and in following through on assignments with minimal direction. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative and professional working relationships with co-workers, employees, and the public.

6. Ability to listen perceptively and maintain equanimity when dealing with conflicts, complaints, and difficult situations.

Demonstrated ability to modify physical activity for common injuries and health conditions. (Required)

9. Demonstrated ability to promote and market fee-based programs to a diverse university audience, including students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Demonstrated experience serving a diverse population of customers. (Required)

10. Knowledge of general CA boating laws and proper / safe boating practices and policies. Experience in watersport instruction, supervision, and program management.

Able to communicate clearly and calmly, especially in emergency situations. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (Required) And
  • Basic watersport skills sufficient to conduct rescues, rent equipment, and supervise activities. (Preferred) And
  • Skill and experience in a minimum of two of the following : Basic sailing, rowing, kayaking, and windsurfing skills sufficient to conduct rescues, rent equipment, and supervise MAC activities. (Preferred)
  • California Boater Card (Required)
  • American Red Cross Adult CPR / FA / AED (Required)
  • Background Check : Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check : A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Age Requirement : Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired.
  • CANRA : The position is designated as a mandatory reporter under CANRA . The employee must sign the "Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse".
  • Evening and / or weekend work. (Required)
