Position Summary :

Ensure that access to all campus buildings is controlled through the maintenance and installation of the manual key systems in order to facilitate a safe and secure learning environment.

This includes the maintenance and inspection of all interior / exterior door hardware including manual and automatic locking mechanisms.

Superior locksmith skills will ensure the safety and security of all college constituents, students, faculty / staff, administration, visitors and assets.

Description of Key Responsibilities :

1. Install, maintain, and repair a variety of doors and door hardware, including Schlage and Best locksets, Von Duprin exit devices, LCN door closers, hinges, strike plates, and door trim.

Inspect interior and exterior doors and door hardware for wear-and-tear on a regular basis and perform preventative maintenance.

Coordinate with other members of the maintenance department and campus safety during the process of conducting troubleshooting and repairs, as necessary.

2. Serve as a member on the College’s Crisis Task Force in order to further the College’s obligation to effectively manage and respond to crisis situations.

Furthermore, the Locksmith may be assigned to attend appropriate meetings (i.e. facility meetings) as determined by their immediate supervisor.

3. Evaluate and regularly inspect campus hardware and manual locking systems, building hours, doors, gates, signs and other building and property features for effectiveness and functionality.

This includes regular preventative maintenance to anticipate and rectify problems before they provide an inconvenience to Campus and compromise safety.

4. Utilize knowledge of ADA, OSHA, and a variety of building compliance codes to ensure the installation of appropriate hardware.

5. Produce and duplicate keys for campus spaces, file cabinets, lock boxes, padlocks, etc. Maintain accurate electronic records and log key access agreement forms for building keys and key rings issued to employees, faculty / staff, students, vendors, contractors, etc.

6. Maintain knowledge of pin tumbler locks, both Best small-format interchangeable cores and standard Schlage cylinders. Manage multiple master key systems in use across campus.

Maintain written and electronic records of lock cores installed on campus locations. Replace lock cores to control access in the event of office moves, missing keys, renovations, etc.

Promptly report the completion of activities accordingly.

8. Set up and / or take down furniture and equipment for events as necessary. Fabricate building components and furnishings such as custom counters, shelving and display cabinets.

9. Maintain a current inventory of locksmith supplies, tools, door hardware, etc. Routinely order supplies from vendors. Obtain and submit price quotes for large orders and projects.

Fill and submit purchase orders following purchases.

10. Participate in new construction or large renovations by selecting new door hardware, verifying hardware schedules, and ensuring proper installation of hardware by contractors.

This includes the ability to work off of plans for the purposes of cost estimating and installation.

11. Work at other locations to substitute for personnel not available or to supplement personnel during times of unusually heavy workload, including but not limited to : annual planting of flowers, large furniture moves, snow removal, and other large projects.

12. Travel to vendors to pick up materials and supplies.

13. Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

1. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in order to receive assignments and instructions, understand written procedures and cautions, prepare written requests, record work completed, etc.

2. Ability to utilize basic mathematical skills necessary for calculating quantities, preparing estimates, etc.

3. Ability to accurately interpret drawings and schematics representing electrical, mechanical, architectural and structural systems.

4. Ability to safely and effectively transport (which may involve lifting up to 50 pounds) and utilize materials and equipment used in facility servicing and maintenance and to work safely from ladders, scaffolds, and other elevated positions.

5. Ability to perform a variety of locksmith tasks requiring knowledge of and skills in working with door hardware, equipment and key fabrication.

6. On occasion, work outdoors in inclement weather and be able to work varying, altered and / or extended shifts / hours.

7. Ability to carry out work efficiently and in a manner which will minimize interference with building activities and operations.

8. Ability to effectively communicate with, and relate positively to, a variety of people representing various building users.

9. Ability and willingness to learn quickly, adapt to changing priorities and multi-task on multiple projects, while abiding by and working within the College organization and to positively contribute to its operation.

10. Technical ability to use manual and power tools in an appropriate and safe manner, while complying with safe work practices and safe job procedures.

Distinguishing Characteristics :

Safety and security of the campus community and its buildings have a direct impact on the overall protection of program continuity, health, and safety of the College community.

Perhaps most striking is the impact this function has on the accessibility, safety and security of students, faculty / staff and guests.

The College’s work force, which is responsible for protection of life and property, is generally made up of individuals who perform a wide variety of duties, and whose work strongly affects a diverse group of users of the facilities.

Thus, employees in this area are expected to be multi-skilled, flexible, and able to work cooperatively with each other (to the extent of doing work of subordinates when necessary) and with other members of the campus community, often without direct supervision.

Because of the nature of the work, reliable and regular attendance is essential.

The individual in this position must interact regularly with a wide variety of members of the campus community, as well as, on occasion, inspectors from City and State agencies and the College’s insurance carrier.

Individuals in this position may be required to work at times that are other than, or in addition to, normal hours and days, including responding at any time to severe weather and other emergency conditions.

Also, the individual in this position can expect to be on-call during nights and weekends to troubleshoot access problems and lock issues.

Individuals must be available by personal cell or home phone to report to work, fit for duty, during these times.

Education / Training :

A high school diploma is required. An associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience :

A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in building maintenance is preferred (specifically locksmith related skills). Computer skills required.

Previous experience managing budgets preferred.

Licenses or Certifications :

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.
