What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student navigator position at InsideHigherEd?

The International Student Success Navigator will be primarily responsible for designing, implementing, and coordinating support for UNL’s international student populations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to : transitional efforts to integrate international students into the UNL community, supporting academic success and student engagement via one to one coaching, meetings, academic skills / engagement programs and workshops, and developing print and web-based materials.

The International Student Success Navigator will provide assistance to international students with arrival, transition and integration to campus, including where to find UNL academic counselors, locating academic buildings, directing students to on-campus health facilities, as well as providing information on off-campus locations for food, entertainment, groceries, etc.

This position will also serve as the primary Sponsored Student advisor on campus and point of contact for sponsored students and on-campus units (including Admissions, Housing Student Accounts, Health Center, academic advisors, etc.

to support sponsored students. The ISSN will work with UNL units and sponsors abroad to ensure the smooth, timely, and complete application and transition to UNL.

The ISSN will also maintain student data and be expected to stay up-to-date on fluctuating sponsor regulations, providing regular reporting to UNL academic advisors and sponsors.

Other responsibilities will include developing and implementing, in collaboration with other on-campus units, co-curricular and cultural programming opportunities that will enhance the living and learning experiences and foster a successful socio / cultural adjustment to life at Nebraska and in the US.

The International Student Success Navigator will develop and deliver programming that will enable students and scholars to socialize beyond their linguistic / cultural groups and integrate them into campus and Lincoln community life, and to understand U.

S. customs, norms, laws, and expectations and will work in concert with, and serve as a support to, international student clubs and organizations across campus.

The ISSN will facilitate communication among sponsored students, academic advisors, and on-campus support units, and assist when action or reporting is needed.

In addition, the ISSN will assist in planning orientations and workshops that target the specific needs of sponsored student groups in order to ensure that these students remain in compliance with immigration regulations, as well as university and sponsor requirements.

Night and weekend activities may be required.

Minimum Required Qualifications :

Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, international studies, public administration, or related field plus one year of related experience working with international students at secondary or post-secondary level in an advising, counseling, transitions, or retention-related role.

Must be able to work independently and within a team environment. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.

Proficiency with word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation and student management / course management systems essential.

Ability to effectively problem solve, think critically, and communicate effectively with international college students and staff in situations of shared responsibility and confidentiality.

Ability to work productively and diplomatically with a wide variety of stakeholders is essential.

Preferred Qualifications :

Master’s degree in education, educational administration, public administration, counseling, psychology, international studies, or related field.

Expertise in strategies and best practices for supporting international students’ success. Prior experience working with students and / or scholars from a diversity of cultures.

Familiarity with J-1, F-1, OPT and CPT policies and procedures.

Criminal history background check will be conducted. Excellent benefits including staff / dependent scholarship program.
