The Institute for Public Strategies (IPS) is seeking an entry-level full-time Social Media Specialist for a program that
focuses on preventing substance misuse and related harms. This position requires a creative problem solver who can
manage the details without losing sight of the big picture. The candidate must work well as part of a diverse team with
varying ideas and work styles. This position is based out of Mission Valley in San Diego.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Help teams develop and implement a well-integrated social media strategy on multiple platforms across programs

and geographies as part of an agency-wide outreach plan.
2. Utilize social media to promote prevention efforts to promote upcoming events, highlight recent news coverage,

create content to explain problems and solutions related to substance misuse, and generate dialogue on related
prevention topics

3. Monitor the news for opportunities to further project goals and objectives
4. Complete progress reports
5. Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Experience with Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook and other social media platforms
2. Ability to plan engaging social media campaigns; creating written materials, infographics, and other dynamic content
3. Ability to work as part of a team of diverse colleagues
4. Flexibility – the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and community conditions quickly
5. Willing and able to work periodic weekends and/or evenings, as well as travel
6. Excellent computer skills and knowledge, including word processing, PowerPoint, desktop publishing software,

Canva, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bilingual capacity
2. Experience developing longer-form social media pieces intended for publication on news center websites
3. Familiarity with news releases and AP Style
4. Experience in a combination of the following areas preferred: population-level alcohol, tobacco, and other drug

prevention strategies, public health, public policy, public affairs, journalism, strategic planning
5. Understanding of upstream prevention strategies to reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug problems

Must have a valid California Driver’s License and an insured, reliable vehicle to use during work.

Position will require an FBI background check with fingerprinting and drug testing. However, lived experience should
