Job Description

The Systems Engineer develops and maintains software solutions that meet our customers’ needs and contribute to the success of ISS. This position works closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software products, troubleshoot issues, and contribute to the overall growth and success of the organization. The Systems Engineer collaborates in all stages of the software development lifecycle. They also suggest new ideas for improving existing processes or products and identifies processes or products for new situations.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering (computer, industrial, or mechanical preferred) or a related field or equivalent relevant experience. Minimum of three years of relevant experience, five or more years preferred. 


Essential Functions

  • Reviews, analyzes, and translates engineering requirements into initial design of an engineering software product or enhancements to existing products
  • Analyzes software functionality requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints
  • Creates and follows detailed test plans and use cases, including boundary conditions and adhering to standards, to test software product through various stages of development cycle
  • Sets up test environments (i.e., installation of ISS software in MS Windows systems)
  • Identifies shortcomings in current test environments and recommends corrections and enhancements
  • Reviews, analyzes, and contributes comments and suggestions for internal and external ideas pertaining to the continuous improvement of product as well as software development processes and methodologies
  • Prepares source materials for user documentation then recommends changes to existing source materials to improve the use of the software module by customers
  • Develops expertise in engineering data standards and data modeling in areas of focus including standards such as the ASD (Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe), S Series, and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) specifications
  • Assists frontline Customer Support with specific complex customer issues in problem solving, interpreting requirements, and educating users on the use of products
  • Works with Business Development on software development and services proposals
  • Interacts with customers or other employees to understand and interpret customer requirements
  • Provides support and recommendations to team or project leadership
  • Mentors others as needed


Essential Functions

  • May serve as Team Lead for specific projects (usually single scope)
  • May attend industry/regulatory events to learn
  • May interact directly with customers on specific customer issues
  • May perform software product or subject matter training

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to define, communicate, and document complex system requirements in support of the software development and to accurately communicate progress and obstacles with assignments

  • Eagerness to identify, evaluate, and adapt new technologies to address challenges within a specific area
  • Ability to execute routine activities with impact usually limited to a team or project level and to analyze and solve basic problems
  • Ability to conduct and document research to make recommendations
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance from a senior employee
  • Ability to translate more complex technical requirements into software specifications  Ability to mentor less experienced employees


Common Competencies

  • Effective time management and organizational skills while working on one or more projects
  • Confidence working in MS Windows operating system
  • Comfortable working with MS Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


Work Environment

This full-time position operates in a professional office environment and is largely sedentary. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although standard hours may vary upon manager approval with potential for a hybrid work schedule.
