The nonferrous facility is located on the 40-acre main campus in Madison (IL) while the computers and electronics are processed in Edwardsville where the Administrative and some logistics offices are located. The commercial department is located on The Hill in St. Louis.

Job Description
The Transportation Assistant to the Logistics Coordinator serves as the right hand to the in-house expert for domestic logistics, remaining current on events impacting the freight routes and transportation channels and providing guidance and recommendations for change proactively.
The right candidate will have a background as a freight forwarder or customs broker. The Interco Transportation Assistant must possess logistics expertise to ensure optimal delivery of products. This person will closely monitor key performance indicators including but not limited to cycle time, cost and quality of service and manage standard supplier performance metrics utilizing a standard scorecard, quarterly business reviews, etc. to ensure the lowest cost lane segments for the level of cycle time and frequency required.
This position requires existing relationships with freight forwarders, domestic carriers, shipping lines, and related strategic partners and the ability and skill to develop global partnerships with a focus on inbound and outbound transportation networks. The Transportation Assistant is responsible for coordinating all aspects of domestic shipments, from planning shipments, monitoring their progress, and preparing the necessary documentation and regulatory requirements including identifying the correct Harmonized Tariff Codes while tracking and managing tariff and customs fees.
This role is accountable for supporting company strategic imperatives and continually identifying operational, service, and process improvements in a time-sensitive and cost-effective environment. The Transportation Assistant works internally with the Interco Commercial and Operations teams as well as with freight forwarders, brokers, vendors, and other outside service providers to guarantee that the department operates in accordance with all local, state, and federal laws.
Ideal candidates will be strong communicators and multi-taskers who are adaptable, resilient and eager to attack unfamiliar problems with curiosity and a bias for action. The position requires someone who is very detail-oriented with exceptional time-management and organizational skills. This person must communicate well on the telephone, via email, and in person with staff members. The right candidate will take great pride in providing excellent service to company team members and both Interco customers and suppliers alike.
Responsibilities Include:
- Learn transportation management system
- Build loads in system
- Learn different load types, understanding on timeframe to schedule loads
- Tracking and tracing shipments
- Assist with sending rate confirmations
- Track and track load (pick/transit/deliver)
- Assist with Dump Freight (Bulk Freight)
- Assist with LTL freight
- Assist with taking over smaller accounts
- Handle loads cradle to grave
- Communicate with account manager on load status
- Schedule pickups with supplier
- Find best coverage (cost/service)
- Close or mark appropriately on TMS
- Call on new prospective carriers
- Develops into Logistics Coordinator role
Qualifications
- Background with experience as a freight forwarder or customs broker.
- Must possess exceptional logistics expertise to ensure optimal delivery of products.
- Knowledge of Harmonized Tariff Codes and the Domestic Logistics Industry
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task
- Exceptional analytical and negotiation skills
- Must be able to maintain excellent communication with external and internal customers
