    Position Title: Assistant Principal / Special Education Coordinator, Special Education

    Assignment Location: Alliance Education Center in Rosemount, MN supporting students and staff in the the Students with Unique Needs (SUN), Intra-Dakota Educational Alternative (IDEA), and Customized Alternative Solutions for Education (CASE) Programs

    Hours per Day: 8.0

    Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, following the Intermediate School District 917 calendar, as assigned

    Anticipated Start Date: July 1, 2024

    Contract Length: 2024 - 2025 school year, 220-day continuing contract including 11 paid holidays (in a full-year)

    Starting salary: $97,700

    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Under the supervision of the Assistant Director/Principal, the Assistant Principal for Intermediate School District 917’s Special Education programs assists with the administrative duties of school operations, providing leadership, supervision and implementation of district policies, curriculum, instructional programs, and staff performance. The Assistant Principlal plays a vital role in providing a consistent, safe environment conducive to education. In this role, one helps lead, model, and encourage respect, communication, and competency. Professionalism, empathy, and a non-judgmental approach are essential when working in an environment with students receiving special education services to ensure their safety and growth and in order to help them understand and exhibit appropriate behaviors at school and in the community. The Assistant Principal will be stepping into a team environment daily, where collaboration, communication, and adaptability are key to the success of the individual, the team, and the success of the students. This role is performed following District policy and State/Federal Laws.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Provide overall direction of the program personnel and students for daily operations in the absence of the assistant director/principal.
    • Provide supervision, evaluation, and support for staff.
    • Complete discipline paperwork, contact and notify necessary authorities for incidents.
    • Create, coordinate, and maintain master schedule of classrooms, courses, and groups for the year.
    • Assist assistant director/principal with budget preparation and staffing.
    • Primary liaison between site, other schools, students, and families for due process behavioral or other needs.
    • Facilitate meetings and provide training to a variety of staff specific to the functions of the program.
    • Consult, communicate, and work cooperatively with teams to provide appropriate programming for students and maintain a positive work environment for all.
    • Comply with School Board policies and administrative practices, including those procedures outlined in the staff and student handbooks.
    • Help to maintain safety of all students and the environment.
    • Utilize data to inform programming decisions and planning for staff and student success.
    • Use flexible thinking and adaptability to address student needs and respond calmly during crisis situations, when necessary.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Master’s degree and Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) administrative licensure as a Principal and/or Director of Special Education, with preference for licensure and experience in special education, Director of Special Education and principal licensure preferred. Current enrollment in an administrative licensure program may be considered. Leadership experience in one of the previous licensure areas preferred.
    • General knowledge of school administration principles, practices and procedures, laws and administrative policies governing student service programs, and transporting of students.
    • Ability to understand student rights pertaining to disciplinary procedures.
    • Thorough skill at operating database systems with general skill at operating standard accounting software and other office technologies.
    • High level of skill at presenting ideas effectively in both written and oral format and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with administrators, member district personnel, local law enforcement, staff, and students that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.
    • Experience implementing positive behavior interventions and supports and the due process requirements for special education.
    • Willingness and ability to work with students receiving a high-level of special education services.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, bending, leaning, and repetitive motions.
    • Occasionally requires exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
    • Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement, observe general surroundings and activities, perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and convey detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly via vocal communication.
    • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may require wearing of personal protective equipment.
    • Locations are generally moderately noisy.

Our programs are located in more than 20 sites throughout the south metro, including Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) where our district office is located.
