Job Summary:
Xanterra Travel Collection® is seeking an environment, health, and safety professional to develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive environmental and risk strategies and programs for Xanterra’s lodging, retail, restaurant, and transportation operations in Glacier National Park nearby operations. This role provides an opportunity to apply a passion for sustainability and safety, technical knowledge, and leadership skills in this beautiful and inspiring environment. The Director will have a hands-on approach during the intense summer tourism season and use the winter off-season to analyze, strategize, generate reports, and prepare.

Responsibilities
Risk Management duties and responsibilities:
Control loss by reducing the frequency and/or severity of losses through preventative measures, such as conducting training, ensuring life safety systems are appropriate, auditing workplaces and guest-facing locations, participating in NIMS training and managing IAPs for reasonably anticipated hazards, and engaging local and corporate support.
Responsible for risk or exposure identification; measuring and evaluating identified risks; control of exposures through elimination or a mitigation plan to reduce the risk of business interruption, damaged reputation, and loss of employees. Conduct continual risk monitoring to assess existing and potential exposure.
Review project contracts and designs, including contractor safety plans. This will include some or all of the following examples (not an exhaustive list): life safety, fire prevention and suppression, ergonomics, chemical handling and storage safety, environmental impact, PPE review, EHS training for operators, etc.
Manage certificate of insurance (risk transfer) processes. This applies to specialty projects as well as ongoing maintenance requirements.
Act as a liaison or location representative with Xanterra’s third party administrator, employees, guests and/or defense attorneys dealing with liability or legal matters. Coordinate and/or conduct accident/incident and close call investigations.
Responsible for customization and administration safety and health, risk and loss prevention programs to assure compliance with applicable regulatory authorities, contractual requirements, and company programs. Manage the risk and safety obligations in the National Park Service (NPS) contract and document accordingly.
Conduct and participate in internal and external audits. Manage the departmental self-inspection program, including training departments on conducting self-inspections and documenting them. Collaborate to identify solutions, when appropriate. Manage timely resolution of needed corrective actions.
Coordinate workers’ compensation and facilitate return to work.
Sustainability duties and responsibilities:
Pursue the achievement of Xanterra and NPS sustainability goals through the development, implementation, and maintenance of environmental strategies and programs for Xanterra’s Glacier operations.
Maintain certification of the company’s Our Softer Footprint® Environmental Management System (EMS) under ISO 14001 standards including successful completion of annual internal and external environmental audits.
Ensure legal compliance with NPS, local, state, and federal environmental statutes and regulations and minimize liabilities from potential hazards. This may include hazardous materials, hazardous waste (RCRA), universal waste, ozone depleting substances, asbestos, lead, PCBs, pesticides, fuel storage and delivery system management, and public water systems.
Track and improve detailed sustainability KPIs including utility use, greenhouse gas emissions, and sustainable procurement through Xanterra’s Ecometrix system.
Manage and assist with all solid waste disposal, recycling, and composting.
Once proficient with ISO 14001, travel to one other Xanterra property to perform an internal EMS audit annually.
Joint and other responsibilities:
Cultivate a culture of safety and sustainability through effective leadership, setting an example, messaging campaigns, inspections, and other means of ensuring accountability. Use the Xanterra Live Life program as a messaging platform in conjunction with other location initiatives.
Measure the impact of programs and prepare required monthly and annual reports for Xanterra and the NPS.
Actively engage with location executive team via meetings, dashboards, audits, reports, and trainings on the status of EHS programs, accident trends, accident reduction programs, and sustainability goals.
Prepare and administer the annual financial plan and capital requests for the Risk and Sustainability Departments.
Lead and document staff training on all EHS and security topics.
Communicate with and educate guests, employees, and other stakeholders about resolving sustainability and risk challenges, achieving objectives, applying for awards, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Hire, train, and supervise any staff required to achieve objectives. This currently consists of a Safety Program Manager, Integrated Pest Management Tech, security guards, and waste and recycling disposal truck drivers. The Director may occasionally need to fill the duties of subordinates during vacancies.
Keep abreast of regulatory developments, industry trends, and new technologies that may reduce Glacier’s (and associated entities’) environmental footprint and which may impact compliance with occupational safety and health requirements.
Occasionally stay on-location overnight to minimize travel time.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in environmental or occupational health and safety, environmental science, risk management, sustainability, or related field.
Five years of professional experience in environmental, safety, and/or risk management.
Hands-on management style with the ability to motivate and inspire others.
Experience writing environmental and safety programs and reports
Strong relationship and communication skills with the ability to convey ideas effectively to a variety of audiences, including large groups.
Ability to present programs that are practical and financially sound while also carefully introducing, promoting, and driving change.
Practical knowledge of NFPA Life Safety and OSHA codes and regulations.
Excellent written, verbal, analytical and problem solving skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Offices products including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to learn company-specific programs and tools.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
What Would Set You Apart:
Experience with an ISO 14001:2015 certified EMS.
In-depth knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
Experience with claims management, reporting, and restricted duty program management.
Experience in the hospitality industry
Understanding of DOT compliance requirements
Master’s Degree in Sustainability, Risk Management, Business Administration, or related field
Passion For national parks and public lands
Physical Requirements include:
Ability to sit for long periods, including up to six hours driving a vehicle.
Ability to live in a remote, seasonally cold, rural environment.
Ability to work in a higher altitude environment.
Ability to climb stairs.
Ability to lift boxes of materials of 30 – 50 lbs.
Ability to walk, reach, stand, as necessary to perform job duties as noted.
Pass a DOT physical exam, pre-employment drug screen, federally-required random screens throughout the season, and comply with the Xanterra Driver Safety Policy.
