Qualifications:

To qualify for this position of GS-11 Law Clerk, you must meet the qualification requirements listed below by the closing date of this announcement, excluding the education requirements below which must be met within 9 months from the date of application.
Possess a Juris Doctor degree plus one of the following:
- A judicial clerkship; OR
- One year (12 months) of professional legal experience; OR
- An LL.M. degree that requires one full year of graduate study; OR
- Superior law student work or activities, such as:
- Academic standing in the upper third of the law school graduating class;
- Work or achievement of significance on law reviews or journals;
- Special high-level honors for academic excellence in law school (e.g., election to the Order of the Coif, winning of a moot court competition, or membership on the moot court team that represents the attorney's law school in competition with other law schools); or
- Full-time or continuous participation in a legal aid program (as opposed to one-time, intermittent, or casual participation); or
- Significant summer law office clerk experience (i.e. IRS Chief Counsel Extern Program or Summer Program).

Responsibilities:
Chief Counsel Law Clerks serve in entry level positions that provide the opportunity to acquire significant training and experience in tax law. Appointments will be made at the GS-11 grade level for no more than 14-months, pending bar association admission. Law Clerks may be converted to an entry-level Attorney position after admittance to a state bar association and demonstration of satisfactory employment during the interim period. Failure to receive admission to a state bar association within 14 months of appointment to Law Clerk will result in termination.As an entry level Attorney, the incumbent will be assigned to a group providing legal counsel to Small Business/Self Employed (SBSE) and other Counsel and IRS activities, which are responsible for serving specific groups of taxpayers. Chief Counsel trial attorneys represent the government in Tax Court and provide advice to IRS field staff on issues in which Service position is established. Trial attorneys in the SB/SE organization specialize in tax litigations in the U.S. Tax Court, primarily involving tax issues impacting individuals, including individuals, including individual international tax issues, partnerships, S corporations, LLCs, LLPs, estate and gift, and whistleblower awards.
