The Need After 25 years of continued growth and operational success in pioneering the work of protecting those who are experiencing poverty from violence, IJM has become a $100 million organization. As IJM continues this trajectory of growth and scaling of its impact, with the Vision to protect 500 million people by the year 2030, IJM is seeking a communications powerhouse, one who loves words, finds joy in the details, and creatively partners with stakeholders to create strategic communications that inform, inspire, and engage employees. As part of the Enterprise Communications team within the Executive Office, the Director, Internal Communications plans and executes global internal change and communications strategy aligned with IJM’s vision, goals, and values. Working closely with teams across the organization and with the Lead, Internal Communications, the Director positions IJM’s enterprise-wide initiatives and projects to measurably meet their communication objectives. Additionally, the Director is a strategic advisor to peers and leaders whose expertise helps identify global communication connections and opportunities. The Director provides key support by means of strategy and key message development, stakeholder relationships, change management, superior writing and editing, project planning, and expertise with digital tools and multimedia. The role shapes and improves the employee experience by developing and delivering content that connects our employees to IJM’s mission and to each other. This position is open to remote work or based in the Washington, DC area and reports to the Vice President, Enterprise Communications. Responsibilities: Strategy, Knowledge Development & Implementation Develop and execute global internal communications strategy. Contribute to IJM’s global key message development. Provide strategic counsel to stakeholders on best practices and techniques to meet communication objectives. Develop global change and communication plans, creating process, strategy, timelines, and deliverables. Manage multiple projects on time and on budget. Leadership and Management Partner with leaders and peers on global communication strategy, providing direction, coaching, templates, and tools. Review material created by the Lead, Internal Communications, providing feedback and coaching. May direct business strategy for global internal communication tools, such as Yammer, Teams, or SharePoint. Participate in enterprise crisis management, supporting the Vice President, Enterprise Communications. Networking & Partnership Build strong, productive relationships with internal partners (e.g., CEO Office, HR, IT, Marketing, Legal, Executive Office), providing insightful communication counsel and identifying opportunities for collaboration. Partner with Global Marketing to leverage and repurpose content among internal and external communication channels, and to develop and uphold internal brand guidelines. Policies and Procedure Lead development of global internal change and communication policies, best practices, and process documents. Lead governance and management of global internal communication tools such as SharePoint, Teams, and Yammer. Communication Develop and execute global change and communication plans, partnering closely with internal stakeholders (e.g., CEO Office, HR, IT, Marketing, Legal, Executive Office) and advising project teams on enterprise initiatives. Coordinate planning and execution of executive communications, such as presentations, meetings, videos, and other content. Schedule and create integrated content to feed our global internal communication channels, including emails, newsletters, intranet, internal social feeds, and presentations. Write compelling stories that engage our global employees in the business, aligned with the company’s strategic priorities, vision, mission, and values. Training and Development Stay current with and make recommendations on global internal communication best practices, tools, and resources. Provide coaching feedback to the Lead, Internal Communications. Documentation, Reporting & Data Management Evaluate data and report on engagement within IJM internal communications channels and make data-informed recommendations to improve communications content or delivery. Oversee global calendars and project planning to ensure timely distribution of communications across channels and develop reporting to inform content decisions. Events and Logistics Oversee content development and execution of large-scale internal events and activities, such as the All Hands, Board meetings, online discussions, and video creation. Requirements: Minimum 7-10 years working in internal communications, with organizational change management experience; Graduate degree in communications or related field; Exceptional written and verbal communication; demonstrated ability to work effectively with senior executives; Strategic thinking and ability to craft a strong narrative; Excellent writing, editing (AP style preferred), and design skills; Excellent project and time management; disciplined with priorities; Expertise with intranets and internal social media platforms; Proficiency with Office 365 and Creative Cloud applications; Skilled at compiling and analyzing metrics to deliver actionable insights and recommendations; Thrives in a collaborative, team-oriented environment; Flexible and able to react positively to challenges and change; Ability to prioritize and multitask in a complex environment; Global and cultural awareness; Ability to build trust; Proficiency with multimedia: photography, graphics, video (filming, production, editing) preferred; Knowledge of HTML and content management systems preferred; and Knowledge of Google Analytics, or other analytics platforms preferred.
