Organizer/Organizing Representative - UAW Region 6

UAW Region 6 represents over 100,000 active and retired members in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai’i, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington organizing for worker power and social justice.

Organizing Representatives are highly experienced staff who support new worker organizing, work with existing Local Unions to build worker power, as well as participate in developing the Union’s programs to achieve social justice. Organizing Representatives have a demonstrated record of leading organizing drives and contract campaigns to completion, and in particular identifying and developing diverse and effective leaders from within bargaining units. They also have substantial experience working with Local Union administrative and financial frameworks and data systems.

The position will be based in Northern California and may require extensive travel, including overnight stays out of town, daily driving, evening and weekend work. This position reports to the UAW Director of Organizing and the UAW Region 6 Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support democratic, worker-led organizing, including membership engagement and mobilization.
  • Respond to organizing leads and provide support for workers who want to form unions in their workplace.
  • Develop strategic organizing goals to build power within UAW-represented industries.
  • Increase existing membership engagement and mobilization through democratic, worker-led programs.
  • Support broad, diverse leadership development.
  • Identify and develop political/community action plans.
  • Support internal and external organizing campaign communications.
  • Design and conduct trainings.
  • Build capacity for direct action and strike readiness.
  • Manage data to support internal and external organizing.
  • Help set priorities and strategic goals of Local Unions and Region
  • Assist other staff representatives in regional campaigns.
  • To support National Departments and Officers upon request and coordinate internally with various departments as appropriate to support department objectives.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Preference given to UAW members in continuous good standing of the International Union for a period of (1) year, pursuant to Article 14, section 3 of the UAW Constitution.
  • Four years' experience in union organizing, including experience for a complete campaign as a lead organizer or equivalent.
  • Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to support leaders of all backgrounds and experience levels in learning.
  • Commitment and understanding of building a participatory and equitable union culture.
  • Strong analytical and independent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness to adapt to changing priorities and demands.
  • Strong familiarity with contract language and bargaining patterns within UAW-represented industries (particularly higher education)
  • Thorough understanding of laws, standards related to public sector organizing and bargaining.
  • Drafting and proofreading copy for internal and external dissemination
  • Computer skills necessary to support basic functions of Local Union and external organizing.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that support a respectful and positive work environment.
  • Ability to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage time and priorities is a necessity.
  • Basic understanding or proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Forms) and social media and media outreach to supervise and direct such work.
  • A valid driver’s license and a working automobile

Salary and Benefits

This is a full time, in person position based in Northern, California and the area serviced by UAW Region 6. The position will be based near where substantial concentrations of higher education workers live and work and will require extensive travel, including overnight stays out of town, daily driving, evening and weekend work. TThe UAW offers a starting salary of $106,438.54 for this position, including health, retirement, and other benefits. Relocation may be available.
