Position Title: Probation Officer
Department: 64A District Court Pay Grade 12 @ $24.21/hour

Purpose of Position:
Under the supervision of the Court Administrator, the Compliance/Probation Officer monitors probationers to ensure that they are following all the conditions of their court ordered probation.
Additionally, this position monitors the reporting and non-reporting probationers to assure compliance with their probationary terms and conditions such as paying restitution and completing community service and programs. The Compliance/Probation Officer also handles all aspects of a payment plans, and ensures compliance with all fines and costs and restitution.

This is an entry level Probation Case Manager position. Applicants must have excellent oral and written communication skills, math skills, computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite and keyboard skills.
Applicants must be able to present themselves well and professionally in court and with clients. The chosen applicant will supervise a caseload of misdemeanor offenders, write pre-sentence reports, prepare violation reports, attend court, administer drug tests and perform a variety of other functions related to probation supervision. Applicants must have high integrity, be trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Ensures adherence to establish safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Create payment plans, income withholding and garnishments
- Create monthly reports for payment compliance and schedules court dates for non-payment
- Conducts initial interviews with defendants procuring a personal history; explains probation terms and answers any questions.
- Monitors the community service hours of probationers and non-probationers
- Determines restitution terms and conditions
- Determines if defendants completed court ordered programs.
- Determines if defendants have completed court ordered programs
- Gathers data from various sources including police, schools,
- Prepares and updates reports, Court requested documents, referral information, probation orders, etc.
- Maintains files and filing systems
- Participates in Court Proceedings
Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:
- Ability to operate a variety of automated office machines including copier, computer, telephone system, ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment, ability to operate a computer utilizing work processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, and other software applications.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and other departmental tools, equipment and materials including PBT, drug screening supplies, etc.
- Ability to exert physical effort in light to moderate work involving lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; ability to climb and balance; tasks require visual perceptions
Mathematical Ability
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percentages and measure data.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
- Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents including police reports, inmate lists, urine screen results, criminal justice updates, community service updates, counseling updates and other reports and records.
- Ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals including Probation Officer
Manual, maps, law books and others.
- Ability to prepare pre-sentence reports, bond assessments, alcohol assessments, log sheets, bench warrants, violation, memorandum, correspondence, and other documents using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar and style.
- Ability to accurately record and deliver information, meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality of restricted information.
- Ability to make independent judgments in absence of management, use common sense, and utilize the principles of influence and rational systems in the performance of tasks.
- Ability to learn and understand legal and counseling terminology, to respond immediately to crisis situations, and to balance priorities within and between offices/departments.
