About the role
As the Standard Workers Compensation Product Expert, you will be responsible for crafting and maintaining a simple, standard WC proposition, incorporating underwriting standards, rules, and guidelines, that adhere to the expectations of Standard Casualty customers. You will ensure that the product wording is sufficiently broad to be relevant, appropriate to manage the risks taken and sets the standard in clarity. You will work very closely with underwriters, actuaries, regulatory operations, claims and legal to develop and supervise these products. You must balance the need to enable profitable growth, with the requirement to maintain an acceptable loss ratio within Standard Casualty. Collaboration will be essential and industry deep product and market expertise in the Workers Compensation middle market underwriting is a must. You will drive an approach to portfolio underwriting within the NA Standard Casualty team that includes taking imaginative approaches to reduce noise and bias in underwriting judgement and decision making.
Key accountabilities:
  • Products and Technical Underwriter for assigned line of business
  • Develop new, innovative, simple and easy-to-understand insurance products in the Workers Compensation space
  • Create and recommend local underwriting rules and guidelines for the middle market Workers Compensation. Ensure local guidelines are aligned with group guidelines. Lead periodic comprehensive review of underwriting guidelines and contribute to Group underwriting standards
  • Collaborate with actuarial team, legal and regulatory operations team to develop and file forms and rates
  • Develop and be responsible for the standard Workers Compensation underwriting toolkit, partnering with the actuarial and data science teams to develop the models and tool calibration
  • Drive development and execution of technical training plans for the Standard Workers Compensation underwriting community
  • Support portfolio steering in order to achieve cycle management goals and contribute to periodic in-depth portfolio analysis and provide ad-hoc reports on the latest underwriting and market developments. Provide input to and assess the feasibility of underwriting business plans and new product initiatives
  • Collaborate with the data science team to support the development of steering metrics and reports
  • Establish and maintain underwriting guidelines, and manage underwriting authorities
  • Make underwriting decisions within assigned authority levels and handle the escalation of cases exceeding authority levels

Your vision of a Standard Workers Compensation insurance product in North America is critical to our ambition to develop an open-market, mid-corporate proposition that excites clients and intermediaries. You will also be able to engage with all lines of business, even those outside your personal area of experience in a constructive and substantive way. Ultimately, you will be responsible for the Standard Workers Compensation loss ratio in North America and your ideas and judgment will shape our ability to deliver for our clients and other stakeholders.

You understand and can assess the quality of complex quantitative analysis. This includes forecasting, descriptive and predictive analytics.
Deep primary middle market Workers Compensation insurance market experience is crucial, as you will bring your personal knowledge to bear. You have probably been in a middle market Workers Compensation underwriting or products role for at least 10 years. You will have an open-minded, intellectually curious approach to everything you do; and you are likely someone who is continually learning from a variety of sources.
A Bachelor or Master degree is preferred and willingness to travel domestically several times a year.
