General Description of Work Performed:
This is the entry-level water operator position with the JCPA Industrial Water System. Operator is responsible for performing all tasks required for an Industrial Water Treatment facility to maintain effective, efficient, and sanitary plant operations including monitoring gauges, meters, and control panels. Collects samples for process control, performs routine laboratory tests and analyses, such as pH testing, and documents analyses. Conducts process control tests. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings and test results to determine process adjustment requirements. Within prescribed limits, varies plant operation as required by test results. Operates valves and gates either manually or by remote control. Starts and stops pumps, engines, and generators to control and adjust flow and treatment processes.
Maintains historical logs and equipment monitoring logs and other written records. Tabulates data as required for management analyses. Cleans work areas including hosing down treatment tanks and equipment. Greases operating equipment and makes minor adjustments as required. Monitors status of equipment. Reports equipment problems to maintenance. Assists maintenance personnel with groundskeeping duties and routine equipment repairs. Clears blockages in process piping. Attends training classes and studies technical materials as required. Informs management of major problems as they occur. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationship with operators and personnel from industrial water users.
DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be a high school graduate (GED acceptable) with a minimum of two (2) years' work experience in water/sewer plant or industrial operations and maintenance. Candidates with training and/or certification in water treatment operations or graduates of a process operations technology program will be preferred.
SPECIFIC JOB REQUIREMENTS MAY INCLUDE (but are not limited to):
1. Must reside in Jackson County.
2. Must have a valid State of Mississippi driver's license and be insurable on Port's Auto Insurance.
3. Must be able to perform routine calculations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
4. Must be extremely reliable and must report to work promptly at the necessary time.
5. Must be physically fit and able to perform heavy physical labor for short periods of time, capable of lifting and carrying 50 pounds, walking and climbing stairs continuously for 1-hour, operating groundskeeping equipment such as lawnmowers and weed eaters for 3 hours per day, operate valves, and work with hand tools.
6. Must be able to work around chemicals such as chlorine and caustic soda.
7. Must be able to understand and operate using safe working practices including the wearing of appropriate safety apparatus.
8. Must have good communication skills, both written and oral.

Pay: $23.50 - $26.94 per hour
