SUMMARY: The Director of Transportation provides direction and management oversight for the overall operation of the Transportation Department including driver training, dispatch, administration, payroll, finance and budget planning, new and existing equipment, State and Federal laws/compliance, and vehicle maintenance. The Director of Transportation will lead school bus safety.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage recruitment and training of bus drivers and substitute bus drivers plus develop plans and procedures to retain drivers.
- Manage the supervision of personnel on regular school routes, field trips and activity trips.
- Be responsible for the annual review and discipline of all staff.
- Supervise activities of operations responsible for payroll.
- Manage fleet maintenance of approximately 87 buses.
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for the safe and efficient operation of transportation.
- Manage and implement school bus routes to ensure safe, efficient and timely pupil transportation.
- Develop bidding requirements and specifications for new school buses and equipment.
- Respond to accidents involving school buses and other department vehicles to ensure proper disposition and protection of District resources.
- Report all incidents and accidents of a serious nature to District Office.
- Submit monthly transportation report to Assistant Superintendent.
- Review trends and perform analysis of data to ascertain methods, techniques and procedures to improve operation.
- Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
- Maintain compliance with all Federal and State laws.
- Drives a school bus over assigned routes in emergency situations.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE CLASSIFIED: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility. Must possess a valid CDL and have a satisfactory driving record. Salary: SEE RATE BELOW
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals; Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public; Ability to perform basic math including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Knowledge of school bus operations, school bus driver training programs and safety practices and procedures.
