Position Summary
The Jacksonville University College of Law is a newly founded Juris Doctor program in the thriving legal community of Jacksonville, Florida. The College, as the newest addition to this community, is committed to building a strong, educated legal workforce to help shape a bolder future for Jacksonville, and beyond. The College is scheduled to open Fall 2022 and will provide a comprehensive legal education centered on experiential learning. As a new College, the Assistant Dean will have significant responsibilities in establishing processes and supporting infrastructure for the essential job duties. The Assistant Dean will be responsible for developing the programming, strategies, and processes for academic success and advising, career services, and experiential learning. In addition, the Assistant Dean or Director will serve on the accreditation team and other in-service groups/committees as may be assigned by the Dean. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with experience in legal higher education.

The Interim Assistant of Student Development and Practice for the Jacksonville University College of Law is responsible for the development, implementation and management of: (1) academic success program development and advising, (2) career services and professional development, (3) College of Law Pro Bono Program, (4) College of Law Orientation Program, and (5) experiential learning curriculum and program development.
Essential Job Duties
College of Law Academic Success and Bar Preparation

  • Develop and deliver first-year academic success workshop series
  • Academic success student advising including counseling on time management, exam preparation, and study skills
  • Develop academic oversight programming and processes in conjunction with law faculty and administration

College of Law Career Services and Professional Development

  • Develop and deliver first-year professional development seminar series
  • Counsel students regarding job preparation activities including professional development principles, legal practice area exploration, and expectations of practice
  • Develop relationships with legal organizations
  • Serve as CMS administrator for College of Law and provide training to students and legal employers on utilizing system for employment opportunities
  • Develop processes for graduate employment data collection

College of Law Pro Bono Program

  • Develop relationships for College of Law students to participate in pro bono activities
  • Develop processes and procedures for documentation and organization of student records College of Law Orientation Program
  • Develop comprehensive orientation program by coordinating across all JU departments including, Office of the President, Office of the Provost, Financial Aid, Security, Student

Affairs, and College of Law faculty and administration

College of Law Experiential Learning Program

  • Develop experiential learning curriculum to ensure program is compliant with ABA field

placement standards * Create externship site qualification processes and records management procedures

  • Build and maintain relationships with judicial, corporate, public interest, government, and criminal externship sites

Prerequisites Required for Position
Minimum Education Requirement

  • Earned Juris Doctor or other terminal law degree from an accredited institution

Minimum Work Experience * An active member in good standing of the Florida or other state Bar

  • Experience as a practicing attorney
  • Experience with academic success and bar preparation programming and advising
  • Experience with career services programming and advising in legal education
  • Experience with externship supervision, placement, and programming in legal education
