Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) is comprised of 10 companies and is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL (ranked #11 in Best Places to Live by U.S. News). Position Description:
The Software Test Analyst will perform formal and informal unit and integration software testing in support of the IXPE ground systems Science Operations Center (SOC) in the MSFC Science and Technology Office. IXPE is a new NASA astrophysics space observatory due to be launched in late 2021. IXPE scientists will study astronomical sources in the X-ray energy range by measuring the polarization of cosmic X-rays.
This testing will be used to verify ground software functionality per established Formal and Design Level Software Requirements for the IXPE project. The selected candidate will be well articulated and comfortable working in a formal testing environment such as CMMI and will have skills in providing test reports, supporting test readiness, and anomaly reviews, and interaction with Software Readiness Boards in support of formal software product release. This is a part-time temporary position, with initial estimate on average less than half-time and will last approximately 7 months but could lead to other work on the ESSCA contract.
Duties:
- Develop and perform test procedures, including pre-test setups such as data acquisition, software loading/configuration and post-test activities such as data archiving and data analysis.
- Produce, archive, and distribute test data as appropriate to support verification closure.
- Evaluate test data to correlate with test findings and investigate potential anomalies.
- Review program/project documents and provide relevant comments from a test perspective.
- Participate in meetings in support of the above activities.
These activities will be on-going as the ground system matures and the IXPE program completes reviews and schedule milestones.
Qualifications:
A degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a PhD with at least 19 years of experience, an MS with at least 23 years of experience, or a BS with at least 25 years of experience.
Qualifications:
- An understanding of scripting languages such as Python.
- An understanding of Linux shell scripting.
- Familiarity with C or C++ software.
- Familiarity with Neural Network software and CUDA is desirable.
- Ability to write technical documents including test plans, procedures and reports to address verification requirements.

Essential Functions
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
