Apprentice Carpenter

Purpose Statement

The carpenter is a craft person performing carpentry work on commercial, industrial and heavy civil projects.

Job Functions

The following is a list of essential functions to be performed:

1. Cut and frame dimensional lumber with reasonable accuracy.
2. Handle and carry a sheet of plywood, 4’ x 8’ x ¾”, weighing 70 pounds.
3. Handle and carry a sheet of gypsum board, 4’ x 8’ x ½”, weighing 70 pounds.
4. Accurately drive stakes using a four to eight pound hammer.
5. Handle and carry one or more pieces of lumber weighing up to 70 pounds.
6. Climb ladders safely.
7. Climb formwork safely.
8. Erect scaffolding and lift scaffold end sections, weight up to 70 pounds.
9. Lift and place planks up to 70 pounds.
10. Lift and place reinforcing steel weighing up to 70 pounds.
11. Perform hand excavation using pick and shovel.
12. Operate a wheelbarrow or Georgia Buggy.
13. Survey line and grade with use of instruments.
14. Weld and cut mild steel.  Erect and handle structural steel shapes; handle compressed gas cylinders (oxygen/acetylene).
15. Set up temporary heaters and handle propane bottles.
16. Operate all types of hand tools (including but not limited to drills, saws, etc.)
17. Erect and handle many types of formwork, both gang sets and hand sets.
18. Cut and install roof framing and ceiling materials.
19. Install siding.
20. Handle and install all types of insulation.
21. Place and finish concrete in minor areas using screed boards and hand tools.
22. Hang doors and install finish hardware.
23. Give hand signals to crane operators.
24. Climb scaffolding safely.
25. Rig construction equipment and materials safely.

Job Requirements

1. Be responsible for company property entrusted to your care.

5. Read and analyze measurements.
6. Add, subtract, multiply and divide.
7. Work in inclement weather, footing may be wet or slippery.
8. Follow directions.
9. Communicate with supervisor and other craft persons.
10. Work environment will generally be outside.  It also will be dusty and noisy.
11. Lift heavy objects up to 70 pounds in weight.
