Jefferson County is seeking applicants for a Roads Team Leader in the Public Works Department.
Performs assigned duties necessary to support the operation of various small to heavy equipment engaged in road construction, repair, and maintenance of County roads. The Roads Teams Leader may coordinate the daily activities of assigned staff members.
This position works under the general supervision of the Roads Supervisor. It may work as a lead person to direct subordinates regarding material and equipment needs for specified projects and act as the Roads Supervisor in their absence.

- Schedules, organizes, and guides work projects, including estimating time and materials, equipment and supplies, and making field crew assignments.
- Operates and trains others in using small to heavy construction equipment such as the paving machine, chip spreader, road construction trucks, backhoe, loader, grader, roller, concrete saw, and other equipment assigned to Pubic Works.
- Performs asphalt paving activities, including paver operation, chip spreader operation, raking, roller operation, and paving operations planning.
- Produces, installs, repairs, and maintains street signs. Supports a wide variety of County requests by overseeing and participating in traffic control and equipment operation.
- Performs various tasks in maintaining or constructing highways, bridges, and other public works projects.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent.
A qualified applicant will have at least two years of experience in a similar Roads crew role. A preferred applicant will have at least five years of experience in the (Government Sector).
The ideal candidate will also have Road Scholar 1 & 2 certifications; and training certificates such as APWA’s 90 hours of instruction in Public Works Supervision and Management, ODOT’s ACP, Bridge, Environmental, or Construction Inspector Training Certification
Knowledge and Skills
- The position requires a considerable working knowledge of the methods and techniques of road construction and road maintenance.
- Requires knowledge of: Inspection, servicing, repair, or replacement methods used in road construction/maintenance, right of way weed control and abatement, rock crusher operations, or storm drainage systems.
- Occupational hazards and safe work practices sufficient to conduct training and observe work behavior in the field.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Must have the ability to communicate via Outlook E-Mail
Licenses and Certificates
Must have a valid Oregon Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Must have a valid unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement or be able to obtain it within nine to twelve months of hire.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where some safety considerations exist from physical labor and truck operations. Must be able to work seven days a week outside of regular work hours as directed.

Probationary Requirement
This position is based on the successful completion of a nine-month probationary period.
