QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field is required
Previous experience with immigration legal or social services is strongly preferred
Fluency in English (reading, writing and speaking) is required. Additional language is a plus.
Strong written and oral communication is required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel applications, Google suite applications and database management are a plus.
Possess strong organizational skills, attention to details and high standards of quality required
Community-based outreach and/or work based on immigration related issues experience is preferred.
1-2 year(s) paid or volunteer experience in working with immigrants and refugees strongly preferred
Previous DOJ representative experience preferred: The role requires a candidate to complete and pass all associated training. JRCHC will pay for the training.
JOB SUMMARY: The Immigration Support Specialist is responsible for representing clients before the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies.. It is required that staff hired in this role will become DOJ Accredited. Employment is contingent upon passing all required training successfully, meeting all Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Access Program (OLAP) requirements to become DOJ Accredited and becoming DOJ Accredited.
Essential Job Duties
CLIENT CARE
Provide assistance with completion and direct support with DHS applications, specifically U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) forms including but not limited to naturalization, citizenship, adjustment of status and travel documents
Represents client before the USCIS Buffalo Field Office for naturalization, adjustment of status and other interviews
Screen, assess and evaluate client needs and determine eligibility for immigration benefits and program services
Support and guide clients on naturalization, adjustment of status, and family reunification available both through USCIS and through the Department of State (DOS) for certain refugee populations
Work with clients to gather documents, and assist clients to complete applications.
Respond to inquiries from clients regarding case status and submit inquiries on case status to USCIS
Represent Jericho Road Community Health Center (JRCHC) with clients, community members, and partners by receiving and returning phone calls and emails, scheduling appointments, supporting events (including group processing events), and conducting community outreach for legal services.
Assist in the coordination and/or implementation of community workshops to immigrant and refugee communities on immigration and social issues and programs affecting immigrant and refugee communities such as “Know Your Rights”, naturalization, and health care proxies
Refer clients to other immigration service providers, attorneys or voluntary agencies when warranted due to inability of JRCHC immigration services to provide appropriate assistance
Identifies clients non-immigration needs and makes appropriate referrals within JRCHC or other appropriate social service agencies
Participate in site visits with grantors, organizations and community members
Maintain strict client confidentiality and observe all other ethical practices/obligations as outlined in JRCHC’s Corporate Compliance Plan and Code of Conduct.
ADMINISTRATION
Ensure all actions, person conduct, and communications represent the organization in a highly professional manner at all times.
Pursue Department of Justice Accreditation by successfully completing all vital training; participate in all necessary in-person and virtual trainings
Utilize legal reference materials relevant to the client’s immigration and naturalization needs
Ability to function autonomously and discern when to seek direction, and when to make decisions.
Process correspondence from USCIS and other DHS agencies, including notifying clients of case updates, assisting clients to prepare responses to notices or evidence requests as appropriate, and following up with relevant parties.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date physical and electronic files and detailed case notes, enter required data in a timely manner, meet all case reporting requirements within established timelines and standards.
