Description
This position will collect, process, and analyze environmental samples using biochemical and molecular methods in support of NASA human spaceflight programs. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining records of results to be reported for operational and research activities, attending meetings and training relevant to Microbiology Laboratory operations, and to assisting in hardware development as required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Document procedures and quality-control methods in conformance with ISO-9001 requirements.
- Acquire and process microbial samples for environmental lab operations and flight or ground experiments as needed using standardized laboratory work instructions.
- Enter and record results using a Laboratory Information Management System.
- Maintain laboratory proficiency requirements and records.
- Attend meetings and training related to Microbiology laboratory operations and research.
- Support maintenance of optimal laboratory equipment performance and maintain supply inventory needed for operations.
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly laboratory maintenance tasks.
- Interact with vendors and technical personnel in support of Microbiology laboratory efforts.
- Prepare test methods, test plans, and technical papers as required.
- Prepare and submit purchase requests for equipment and laboratory supplies as needed (this may include conducting market surveys, obtaining cost estimates, and preparing necessary forms and justifications).
- Review product literature, publish laboratory results, and attend workshops and/or conferences to maintain technical proficiency and update skills.
- Prepare and present safety topics to laboratory personnel periodically.
- Responsible for compliance with KBR Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all Company safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
- Responsible for compliance with the KBR Quality Assurance Plan, policies, and procedures.
- Responsible for completing all assigned training in a timely manner.
- Must be proactive in assisting teammates with all laboratory activities.
- Must be willing to work occasional off-nominal schedules to assist with special projects and to meet deadlines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required:
- This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in an area of biological science (e.g. biology, biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, or molecular biology).
Desired:
- Ability to perform as an individual contributor on assigned tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to evaluate, select and apply specialized knowledge to achieve task completion.
- Ability to demonstrate advanced competence in adaptation or modification of standard techniques.
- Ability to complete multiple or complex projects within stated deadlines.
SKILLS/TRAINING
Required:
- Laboratory experience with microbiological techniques, including bacterial or fungal culture.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Desired:
- Mycology experience.
- Familiarity with microscopic methods.
- Molecular biology experience.
