PURPOSE:
Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service. To train, coach, supervise, and evaluate Grocery associates; to maintain performance standards; to supervise and participate in all Grocery, Dairy and Frozen activities. To supervise store in the absence of Store Director or Asst. Store Director. Monitor and enforce all Government and Company regulations.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting care, concern, and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the associate’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
- Genuinely thanks each customer and invites them back.
- Assists customers by: (examples include) o escorting them to the products they’re looking for o securing products that are out of reach o loading or unloading heavy items o making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests o performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
- Answers calls promptly when paged, and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking special orders.
- Listens to customer complaints and resolves problems as appropriate.
- Supervises and participates in all Grocery, Dairy and Frozen activities, including but not limited to receiving product, stocking shelves, rotating/facing, storing and ordering products in order to maximize sales, earnings, and customer satisfaction.
- Maintains performance standards within the department.
- Attains budgeted sales and profit goals of the Grocery, Dairy and Frozen departments.
- Prepares and completes Grocery, Dairy and Frozen daily bookwork, record keeping, and documentation required by the Company or the Store Director.
- Ensures proper merchandising of product in the Grocery, Dairy and Frozen departments by understanding and following schematics and the weekly merchandising newsletter.
- Responsible for the overall condition of the Grocery department.
- Checks invoices against delivered products and supplies, placing them in designated product storage areas according to “5S” standards.
- Conditions shelves and displays – straightening and facing merchandise.
- Ensures cleanliness of all department equipment, displays, and storage areas according to sanitation schedule and standards.
- Ensures storage area is organized according to “5S” standards.
- Monitors temperature of all display and storage units for proper product holding.
- Plans and builds end cap displays and fills through the week as necessary.
- Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
- Adheres to all company policies, procedures, Safety and Sanitation regulations, and individual store guidelines.
- Reports to work when scheduled and on time.
- Responsible for proper inventory control through ordering, stocking, rotating products on the shelf, and writing product number on all overstock.
- Uses SPA gun to order product and maintain accurate inventory count in EOE system.
- Protects associates and customers by removing potential hazards from the sales floor and parking lot in a timely manner.
- Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS: (These are considered occasional in nature)
- Unloads trucks using power pallet jacks and forklift to place product in appropriate storage area.
- Assists in interviewing new associates.
- Assists in other areas of store as permitted by Collective Bargaining Agreement(s).
- Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.
- Attends Company training meetings.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitors, complies with and enforces Government and Jewel Safety and Sanitation regulations and wage and hour laws.
- Evaluates work performance of department associates and recommends personnel action, such as retention, promotion, transfers, disciplinary action, or dismissal.
- Prepares weekly work schedule for department to ensure adequate coverage and service level while adhering to weekly sales and payroll budgets
- Trains, coaches, and supervises Grocery, Dairy, and Frozen department associates in all activities, policies, procedures, and standards.
- Supervises total store in the absence of the Store Director and the Assistant Store Director.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB:
- Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with multiple variables as they are presented.
- Must have the ability to do simple addition, subtraction, counting, and recording.
- Must be able to understand and follow written, verbal or demonstrated instructions, write identifying information, and request supplies orally or in writing.
- Visual requirements include clarity of vision at a distance of less than 20 inches to less than 20 feet, with color vision and depth perception. Must be able to read the descriptions on the boxes and shelf tags to order product and place merchandise in the proper locations.
- Must be able to work shifts varying in length and times, including nights, weekends and holidays
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The duties for this position are normally conducted in a store environment. Exposure to approximately 28 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in cooler and -20 degrees Fahrenheit while handling products in the freezer. There is significant responsibility to maintain customer service levels and handle multiple priorities. The position involves sharp knives and is occasionally exposed to dust, cleaning chemicals, and equipment movement hazards. This is a fast paced work environment where stressful situations are encountered.
EQUIPMENT USED TO PERFORM JOB:
Computer, printer, fax machine, copier, box cutter, stock cart or U-Boat, trash and cardboard compactors, intercom, pallet jack, forklift, power pallet jack, step ladder, riser ladder, dock plate and SPA gun.
