The University of Iowa is seeking an Occupational Safety Manager.  This role will direct and lead the development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of FM Safety Program and Health/Wellness Programs to ensure the safest possible working environment for Facility Management (FM) staff.  Develop strategies, systems, and structures to ensure the engagement, ownership, and collaboration of all FM personnel and the integration of safety into the day-to-day culture of the FM organization. Provide management and oversight of the FM Safety Training program through the Compliance & Qualifications System. Partner with Design & Construction to provide Subject Matter Expertise for Contractor Safety programs including incident support and construction site safety.  As the FM Safety Officer, partner with EHS, Risk Management, Legal, and other UI groups to align and deliver UI and FM safety compliance and improvement.  Hire, develop, and lead a team to meet FM business needs for FM Safety programs. 

This position is performed fully on campus.

Duties to include:

  • Collaborate with FM Leaders and others to develop strategic plans with defined action plans, ownership, and structure to drive sustained operational impact.
  • Directs, maintains, identifies improvements, and drives implementation for FM safety programs and processes to attain full institutional compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations per regulatory authorities such as OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.
  • Direct, maintain, and support the FM Safety training compliance program using the Compliance and Qualifications (CQ) system.
  • Establishes a culture of safety, health/wellness, learning, teamwork, and continuous improvement through engagement with FM leaders and campus partners. Identify and recommend training opportunities to improve FM leaders safety culture.

Location: University Services Building

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

About Facilities Management:

Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Environmental Safety & Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science/Studies, or other applicable degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Professional experience (typically 7 or more years) of workplace safety experience in a campus or industrial setting, regulatory agency, construction site or combination thereof.
  • Two years of experience with process improvement implementation.
  • Experience with regulatory interaction and interpretation of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI compliance and voluntary standards.
  • Demonstrated influencing skills in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels of an organization.
  • Reasonable experience in public speaking, technical writing and/or instructing and training delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software (MS Outlook, Word, Excel). 
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Safety & Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science/Studies, or other applicable degree.
  • Experience (typically 10 or more years) of workplace safety experience in campus or industrial setting, regulatory agency, construction site or combination thereof.
  • Five years experience with process improvement implementation.
  • Technical proficiency in Safety programs
  • Current certification for OSHA 30-hour (1910 and 1926)
