Job Title
Resident Minister

Summary
Resident Ministers are an important part of the University’s Campus Ministry program and represent the department in the residence halls. They serve as resources for students of all religious traditions and lend support and strength to the programs and activities that promote the mission and identity of JCU. They are expected to assist students through retreats, programs and other opportunities in both understanding and using methods of prayer in the Ignatian tradition, as well as to assist in Campus Ministry’s work to provide for the spiritual welfare of the university community. Some events require attendance only; others are more challenging, requiring significant planning and implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Campus Ministry Focus Areas:
  • Together with Campus Ministry staff, the RMs will be involved with the following areas: immersions, retreats, small faith communities, liturgy, ecumenical/interfaith outreach, and social justice initiatives
  • Assist in organizing liturgies and prayer services
  • Participate in other programs designed to promote spiritual well-being of students
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly supervisory meetings
2. Residence Hall Focus Areas:
  • Establish ministry of presence; intentionally seek out and cultivate pastoral conversations with residential students, with a particular focus on first year students in the RM’s residence hall.
  • Create residence hall environment of hospitality and approachability
  • Engage in RA staff-related activities (facilitate reflections at “all-staff” staff meetings, be present at appropriate trainings, participate in staff development activities)
  • Share reflections at Murphy Mass (or similar residence hall Mass)
  • Plan and execute ongoing reflective programs
  • In collaboration with Residence Life staff, design and implement programs which benefit the moral and spiritual development of students Meet regularly with the Area Coordinator/Head of Hall
  • Attend meetings with the Resident Ministers and Residence Life staff
  • Participate in crisis response and post-crisis response

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to appropriately share one’s experience of faith and to invite students to explore their own sense of faith, spirituality and the promotion of justice
  • Candidate must live in the residence halls
  • Interest in understand and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with and appreciation of the Jesuit, Catholic nature of JCU
  • At least one year of life experience beyond their undergraduate years

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions
The RM is expected to devote 20 hours each week (a flexible schedule of ministry in the residence hall and general Campus Ministry Departmental work). Most work hours fall in the late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. This ministry formation program is for the spring semester only, beginning August 1, 2024 and ends May 19, 2025. This is a two-semester position, with the possibility an additional year renewal. The compensation for the RM is an apartment in the residence halls, a board plan, a $9,000 stipend, free parking, free use of recreational facilities and the university library. Hours, requirements and stipend may be altered for a second year Resident Minister as requested by the Director of Campus Ministry.

Physical Requirements
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
