The Johns Hopkins Hospital Specialty Nurse: Pre-op Screening and Assessment for the Center for Perioperative Optimization (CPO) has taken on a lead role in ensuring that all patients who are scheduled for surgery are tested for Covid-19 to reduce the risk of same day surgery cancelation and to protect our staff and patients from being exposed to symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
Shifts: Full Time, Day Shift, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Qualifications:
- BSN/MSN from an accredited nursing program required.
- Active Maryland or Compact RN license is required
- BLS CPR certification required: AHA, Red Cross, or Military Training Network accepted
- 3 years RN work experience required; OR / PACU experience preferred
Specific Job Responsibilities:
- Review pre-surgical adult patients medical history, medications, evaluates for special needs (interpreter, access), and assess readiness for surgery
- Collect information during phone screening of patient and notifies surgeon of any concerns
- Confirm or place Nurse Initiated Physician Order ( NIPO) for COVID testing
- Confirm and / or schedule testing at 2-3 day prior with location and phone contact with patient/guardian
- Confirm that testing completed 24-48 hrs prior to day of surgery
- Confirm that EPIC has test results visible prior to patient arrival for day of surgery
- Work with COVID testing labs to facilitate results.
- Coordinate testing/resulting into EPIC for those outside Hopkins or at a distance.
- Review by phone COVID- related visitation policy at time of scheduling COVID testing.
- Assist with day-prior-to-surgery phone calls to review NPO guidelines, verbal COVID symptom screening and medication reconciliation
