The Vice President/Head of Translational Sciences (TS) is to provide strategic and operational leadership for translational science plans that create portfolio value. The VP, TS will be responsible for developing and executing the translational science plans to support the portfolio within time and budget commitments. A major accountability is to implement disease-area and pathway based development strategies across a span of disease areas. The span of disease areas are Rheumatology, Dermatology, GI and Maternal Fetal Immunology and include specialty and rare/orphan diseases. The VP TS is accountable for fit for purpose biomarker plans that quantitatively support risk discharge, acceleration options and other portfolio decision-making at governance. The position currently has direct managerial responsibility for 6 Senior Director level-leaders in the TS group and one Executive Assistant. The position reports to the head of TSM.

Responsibilities include the following:
- Ensuring timely delivery of data, analysis and interpretation to support portfolio milestones.
- In partnership with Discovery, generating actionable disease biology insights that will enable stratification and combination strategies.
- Efficiently and proactively allocating TS resources to optimally support TA objectives, initiatives and portfolio prioritization decisions.
- Maintaining/building strong relationships with key functional partners including Disease Area R&D Leaders, Discovery and Central Data Science. Ensuring role clarity in the interfaces with these organizations.
- Prioritizing the portfolio of external research collaborations driven and funded by TSM to best support R&D strategies
- Attracting, developing and retaining talent within the TS organization.
- Represent the TS organization at the TSM leadership team and functional advisory review meetings.
- Accountable for reporting and delivering high quality responses to requests from health authorities for biomarker data. This spans investigational trials, submissions and marketed products
- An ability to build strong collaborative interfaces with Discovery, Clinical Development, Data Sciences and DPDS is an essential skill
- The VP TS will have a significant external presence on external scientific collaborations including Joint Steering Committees
Essential Leadership Behaviors and Culture
- Building and maintaining close collaboration with Discovery is essential for early alignment on data that will be required/desired, the design of experimental approaches and the creation and implementation of decisional assays
Effective people and change leader and role model for JNJ leadership standards. - Driver of strategy implementation on every program and high performing operating model for TS
- Fosters an environment of innovation and risk-taking to best support disease-area strategies.
- Builds organizational diversity at all levels in the TS organization
- PhD degree is required.
- Minimum of 10 years experience in drug development at biotech/pharma
- Minimum of 7 years of direct 'hands-on' experience in Immunology Translational Science including biomarker development.
- Depth of experience with several different therapeutic platforms preferred (biologics, small molecules and/or gene/RNA).
- Track record of developing and implementing impactful biomarker and translational plans is required.
- Subspecialty medical training in Dermatology, Gastroenterology, or Rheumatology is preferred/
- Demonstrated supervisory and/or leadership experience with clinical and/or research teams is required.
- Strong track record in publications is preferred.
- Location is Spring House, PA, Cambridge, MA or La Jolla, CA.
