Johnson County, KS is seeking a new full-time County position of EMS System Medical Director to assure the effective and efficient delivery of EMS in the County. The EMS System Medical Director oversees the EMS system for Johnson County, KS, including medical direction and clinical oversight for 8 fire agencies, MED-ACT and the Emergency Communications Center. The Medical Director has authority over clinical and patient care aspects of the EMS system including the responsibility to develop necessary medical policies and procedures in compliance with KS Board of EMS statutes and regulations, and the power to limit the activities of those under the Medical Director's supervision who deviate from the established clinical standards of care or do not meet training standards. The EMS system Medical Director is involved in the development and approval of EMS system continuing education to assure the accuracy and validity of the medical content as dictated by the KS Board of EMS. The EMS Medical Director also provides medical direction for numerous law enforcement and school district naoloxone programs.

Duties Include:
- Works closely with the EMS system stakeholders to develop, propose and implement medical protocols for the EMS System according to KS Board of EMS statutes and regulations; serves as a patient advocate in the EMS system; sets and ensures compliance with patient care standards including communications standards and dispatch and medical protocols.
- Develops and implements the process for the provision of direct and indirect medical oversight; oversees the development and implementation of continuing education program for EMS system providers; ensures that the competency of out-of-hospital providers involved in patient care is maintained on an ongoing basis through continuing education and formal credentialing process; develops and implements an effective QA/CQI program for continuous system and patient care improvement; promotes and participates in EMS research in the EMS system.
- Acts as the liaison between the medical community including, but not limited to, hospitals, emergency departments, physicians, out-of-hospital providers and nurses in the EMS system; interacts with regional, state and local EMS and governmental/regulatory agencies/authorities to ensure that standards, needs and requirements are met and resource utilization is optimized regarding provision of out-of-hospital care; participates in advocacy through legislative activities on behalf of EMS system and out-of-hospital medicine at the local/regional/state/national level.
- Maintains an active role in providing public with education and information on the prevention and treatment of emergencies; retains knowledge levels appropriate for an EMS medical director and practicing emergency medicine physician through continued education; maintains active clinical practice in emergency department setting, an active clinical practice in prehospital medicine, and provision of direct medical oversight through regular field responses in the EMS system.

Requirements:
Doctorate degree of Medicine (M.D. or D.O.) and an active license to practice medicine and surgery from the Kansas Board of Health Art
Board Certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or American Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine; Sub-Specialty Board Certification in EMS by the American Board of Medical Specialties
Twelve (12) months of out-of-hospital care of the acutely ill or injured patient.
Twelve (12) months of providing medical direction to out-of-hospital emergency providers.
Knowledge and experience of EMS dispatch and communications; EMS QA/CQI process; Incident Command System; and training or instruction of out-of-hospital providers
Preferences:
Three (3) years of out-of-hospital care of the acutely ill or injured patient (3 years preferred)
Three (3) years of providing medical direction to out-of-hospital emergency providers (3 years preferred)
Capable and willing to serve as an EMS Fellowship Faculty member for the University of Kansas School of Medicine's EMS Fellowship.
Salary : $7 - $150
