Job Description

Install, maintain, and / or repair a variety of electronic systems to ensure the safety and security of inmates and County employees, to include : Install, maintain, and / or repair intercom systems, fire alarm systems / panels, emergency duress systems, closed circuit television, locking control systems, card access system, and other related systems.

Maintain systems that meet or exceed Federal, State, and local safety, security, and fire codes. Research, recommend and implement electronic system upgrades.

Use Computer Aided Design to document electronic systems as installed. Determine electronic system sequencing needs when designing and / or integrating systems.

Test and maintain smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, water flow, tamper switches, etc., including the address system of detectors / sprinkler monitor devices Implement tone and voice announcement mechanisms that ensure open communication in the case of an emergency.

Determine and maximize the coverage area of emergency duress systems. Modify emergency duress systems when needed to provide additional protection and security for nurses and other visitors.

Ensure that card readers allow access to authorized personnel only. Troubleshoot and repair card readers, determining whether the cause is in the unit itself or a programming error.

Ensure the functionality of back-up power supplies. Install cabling and fibre optic wiring to modernize systems. Serve as a lead worker of the Maintenance Helper.

Delegate routine system maintenance and inspection duties to the Maintenance Helper.

Through the use of electronics systems, create an operational and safe working environment for County employees and inmates in the Central Booking and New Century jails, to include : Serve as a subject matter expert in the design, installation, and maintenance of electronics systems, including intercom systems, fire alarm systems / panels, emergency duress systems, closed circuit television, locking control systems, card access system, and other related systems.

Using detailed knowledge of electronic systems and business needs, facilitate the integration of systems to maximize their effectiveness.

Determine innovative electronic solutions to meet and exceed Federal, State and local security and safety requirements. Oversee the installation of new electronic systems in the jails.

Using Computer Aided Design, create design specifications. When outside contractors are used, review contractor specifications, and make changes as necessary to ensure the integrity of the systems.

Install, maintain, and / or repair the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), to include : PLC is the building specific customized software that electronically administers locking systems within the facility to maintain a secure environment.

Troubleshoot system problems, design, and reprogram the PLC using computer programming to address changing facility needs.

Thoroughly test and document changes prior to implementation. Conduct needs assessments to ensure an adequate platform to run the PLC.

Determine and document the frequency of lock operation for every lock to determine proper maintenance schedules.

Perform miscellaneous duties, to include : Perform system back-ups to maintain a recorded history of entrance to the facility, lock operation, closed circuit television, etc.

per departmental policies and procedures. Archive and retrieve back-ups when needed. Create electronic system reports for the supervisor's use in determining maintenance requirements.

Maintain system inspection documentation to meet County and insurance requirements. Maintain documentation of all electronic system plans / changes.

Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements : High school diploma or equivalent, with two years' experience; Valid Driver's License

Johnson County Government requires reference / background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department / Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements : Knowledge of public sector. Associate, Technical or Bachelor's degree in related study. Experience in design, installation, intercom systems, fire alarms, emergency duress, closed circuit TV, card access, PLC and other electronic security related systems.

Education / Experience Substitutions : Experience may be subtituted for degree, education may be substituted for experience.
