Position Summary

The Director, Digital Strategy, Issues Lead will report to the Senior Director, Global Digital Strategy and Content, and focus on enhancing and protecting the Company’s brand reputation across J&J’s digital ecosystem through campaign strategies and issue management communications.

As the digital marketing lead and point person for senior leaders and relevant stakeholders across J&J, this individual will lead social listening, develop organic and paid digital strategies and activation plans, develop and coordinate actions flag and address issues, and set digital engagement policies and guide content with partners to own the narrative and ensure the Company’s positions are clearly understood on any issues. This includes developing always-on guidance and governance to digital channel owners and promoters to minimize risk and manage issues compliantly and appropriately.

The position requires extensive experience in the US and globally in public relations, external and internal brand communications and marketing, issues management, digital campaign planning including social media channel management and senior leadership presence as it interacts and activates across several departments and disciplines.

Responsibilities

Digital Issues Management:

  • Lead J&J’s positioning and set strategies to protect J&J’s reputation on all digital channels as well as educate stakeholders
  • Provide tactical leadership in response to issues-related media coverage of the company as an integral and respected partner to Issues Management, Internal Comms and business digital leads
  • Demonstrate an ability to lead action internally with and without direct authority
  • Build trusted relationships and collaborate across diverse, multi-functional teams to successfully drive objectives
  • Define the best social listening, digital performance and media relations analytics and optimal reporting methods for tracking online activities and interpreting results to better inform strategies
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to leadership that inspires commitment and high performance
  • Work with external agencies and contractors as appropriate to support strategy development, statement development and digital campaign execution

Online engagement policies, governance approach and ongoing guidance:

  • Build, maintain and communicate online digital policies for the company while incorporating key stakeholders at various steps
  • Final decision-maker on digital content messaging and promotional timing across corporate channels to ensure all align positively with current news cycle and events
  • Lead decision making for all business requests for standalone digital channels
  • Set strategy for Digital Governance to guide Brand Ops team in their execution and activation plans
  • Constant partnership with Brand Ops Digital Governance team to provide ongoing guidance to all channel owners using policy, social listening, company priorities/events and media environment as key decision drivers

Leadership: Lead and represent digital strategy and issues globally and in operating markets through engagement and education throughout J&J:

  • Sit comms leadership teams, enterprise comms teams, working groups and cross-sector teams to ensure consistency, comradery and support for like roles.
  • Liaise with digital, comms and global teams for issues guidance, digital policies and campaign strategies
  • Serve as point of contact for senior leadership, digital teams, GCA comms
  • Manage direct reports, agency and contractor support.

Qualifications

  • 10 years of digital marketing and/or digital communication with a focus on issues management and brand protection, reflecting a strong record of success and accomplishment, with a well-respected advisory firm, large corporation or government agency.
  • Experience in the US and Global market teams
  • Senior leadership presence as it interacts and activates across several levels in the hierarchy, departments and disciplines
  • Proven record of excellence in counseling and advising senior management and business leaders on complex business issues and response strategy required
  • Have a strong commitment and track record of talent identification, development and advancement
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate, prioritize and focus the organization on the most critical issues/projects to consistently deliver results
  • An independent, self-directed, and strategic thinker with strong analytical skills who is both collaborative, decisive and who demonstrates sound judgment and ability to hold sensitive information in confidence
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to project and inspire confidence
  • Exhibits leadership and/or adversarial strength as required by the circumstances
  • Strong ability to develop appropriate and best practice social media and site messaging related to our litigations in order to ensure fair and accurate representations of our views in the digital consumer landscape and media coverage

Salary

The base pay range for this position is $142,000 – $244,950 USD

Bonus

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year

Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
