This Principal Scientist candidate will join our high throughput Proteomics, a group within the Discovery Technologies and Molecular Pharmacology (DTMP) department of Discovery Therapeutics, to develop and apply pioneering approaches to mass spectrometry based proteomic analysis. This candidate will lead and build the proteomics bioinformatics group within Discovery Sciences. This effort will support the identification and development of small and large molecule therapeutics for disease indications, including Oncology, Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience, and Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases. You will work in an exciting, interdisciplinary environment, overlapping the different stages of the discovery pipeline, by interacting with several internal and external groups. You should be highly self-motivated and will be expected to critically analyze and interpret data from a variety of sources. You will build visualization suites for interrogation of proteomics data, provide analytical support for proteomics efforts within the group, integrate proteomics data with other ‘Omics’ datasets and interpret that data into clear and concise recommendations for our partners.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, apply and benchmark analytic tools and pipelines for mass spec based proteomics data from both in vitro and in vivo experiments, including quality control.
- Use biostatistics and bioinformatics algorithms to integrate multiple levels of biological information together with proteomics data, for new hypothesis generation, target identification and target prioritization.
- Develop visualization tools for a variety of proteomic data types for the exploration and interrogation of data by partners in other areas of the organization.
- Provide clear interpretation of proteomics data and propose pathways for further computational and biological validation to our therapeutic area partners and collaborators.
- Collaborate across multiple subject areas and contribute to various projects within the organization.
- Demonstrate creativity and apply novel approaches to solving scientific problems. Propose novel and practical ideas, aligned with scientific strategies and demands.
- Keep up to date on new computational methodologies and incorporate into internal pipelines as appropriate. Keep current on literature related to his/her field.
- Communicate in a clear and professional manner, both in writing and orally.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a Master’s degree is required (in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology, System Biology, Natural Sciences, or a related subject area) or an advanced Ph.D. is preferred.
- A Master’s degree with a minimum of 6 or more years of experience in a biotech/pharmaceutical setting, or similar environment (such as academic research), or a Ph.D. with 4 or more years or more of post-degree working experience in a biotech/pharmaceutical setting, or similar environment (such as academic research) is required.
- Drug discovery experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical environment is preferred.
- Experience with ‘Omics’ or similar large-scale data analysis is required.
- Proficiency with R, Matlab or equivalent programming languages is required.
- Experience in other coding languages or interactive visualizations is preferred.
- Experience with large scale data processing, integration and meta-analysis is preferred.
- Experience with proteomic mass-spectrometry data is preferred.
- Experience with collaborating with external partners (e.g. contract research organizations and academics) is preferred.
- Ability to interpret, troubleshoot and report on complex data is required.
- Ability to effectively present scientific data and concepts to international standards is required.
- Strong organizational skills including the ability to handle several projects at a time is required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse colleagues is required.
