Job Summary
Safely and efficiently executes daily tasks related to extrusion manufacturing of synthetic absorbable and non-absorbable multifilament products. Typical tasks include start-up, operation, and shut-down of extrusion and orientation processes, thread-up and doffing of production spools, testing of products, and troubleshooting of processes.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Operates and navigates with the extruder computer control systems.
- Operates the Vac-U-Max polymer feed system and troubleshoots to eliminate feed problems.
- Starts up and runs extruders and affiliated equipment (godets, orientation lines, kamitsus, Statimats, Denier counter, fray counter, etc.) to produce 56, 52, 80 and 62.5 denier VICRYL*.
- Tests fiber denier and performs tray testing as required and when necessary troubleshoots process equipment and takes appropriate corrective actions.
- Tests fiber tenacity and elongation, and tracks results using SPC charting.
- Monitors equipment through measured checks of speeds and temperatures.
- Makes appropriate process changes using the extrusion process specification and troubleshooting guide in conjunction with directions from a higher level Extrusion Process Operator or supervision.
- Loads fiber in Tenney ovens at required intervals.
- Records production data for tracking and evaluating run yield trends, actual yield, and audit progression.
- Handles hoppers or Port-A-Vacs appropriately, weighing and recording data to track polymer usage.
- Maintains accurate and legible documentation.
- Maintains housekeeping standards.
- Basic knowledge of CAMSTAR data system and inputs data as required.
- Makes appropriate process changes using the extrusion process specification and troubleshooting guide and as directed by management.
- Manages the operation of up to six or more extruders running at the same time.
- Starts up and runs extruders and affiliated equipment to produce 14 and 28 denier VICRYL fiber using split stream or dual take-up.
- Monitors environmental room conditions and initiates corrective actions as needed.
- Determines temperature startup profiles based on IV and MI values and polymer history.
- Monitors and responds to quality issues based on SPC trending of fiber properties, fiber denier testing, and observations of physical appearance.
- Troubleshoots extruders (working closely with engineering support) and affiliated equipment and takes appropriate corrective actions to eliminate quality process issues.
- Monitors run yield trends, identifies process issues, recording appropriate information, and effectively communicating this information to support personnel, at shift change, and to management.
- Starts up and runs extruders and affiliated equipment to produce all denier sizes for VICRYL (including monofilament) with minimal direction.
- Performs special projects as directed by Process Engineering or Facilitator.
- Applies an appropriate understanding of polymer behavior and extrusion technology to the extrusion process.
- Coordinates the efforts of others in their proper job function to minimize waste and maximize production yields.
- Learns new extrusion processes when opportunities are presented.

- Comply with quality system requirements as defined within procedures and instructions.
- Use test equipment (Starett Gauge, Mitutoyo Gauge, Microscope, Instron,etc) where applicable.
- Utilize applicable software systems as needed for the job (e.g. ComplianceWire, ADAPTIV, etc.)
- Consistently meet required work performance targets (RE’s), if applicable
- Support LEAN and Six Sigma Initiatives.
- Support Maintenance Excellence (ME2) including 6S and Operator Asset Care.
- Accurately complete records as defined within the job procedures (e.g. manual and/or electronic documentation).
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Consistently meet required Training due date targets.
- Operates personal computers (menu software applications, spreadsheet data entry).
- Operates electronic balances, tachometers, calculators, pyrometers, and hand tools.
- Trains new associates in extrusion, orientation, and testing responsibilities.
- Interfaces with appropriate engineering, facilities, and instrumentation support representatives in a professional manner to ensure manufacturing operations and projects receive effective and timely technical support.
- Supports manufacturing teamwork in the daily communications by participating in shift change meetings and sharing appropriate process information to ensure the timely resolution of manufacturing issues.
- Follow written specifications to manufacture product.
- Package and prepare product for shipment.
- Support Plant Diversity Process.
- Ensure safe working conditions and practices in the department.
- Adhere to FDA quality and worldwide quality systems.
- Demonstrate teamwork in identifying, evaluating, and resolving problems within the department.
Qualifications
REQUIRED EXPERIENCES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school education, G.E.D. or equivalent skills, experience, or training.
- Computer skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal relation skills.
- Problem solving.
- Education beyond high school (college, military, technical school, extrusion experience) is preferred.
- Basic math skills: add, subtract, multiplication, division, percent, fractions.
- Basic knowledge of industrial tools and instruments.
- Basic knowledge of fiber physical properties and appearance quality (tenacity and elongation).
- Basic knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) used to identify and respond to process trends.
- Ability to make timely and accurate decisions.
- Leadership skills are desirable.
- Self-motivated and capable of completing job duties with minimal supervision.
