Description
SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Planning, performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the efficient and safe repair of automobiles and a variety of construction and maintenance equipment.
- General knowledge of hydraulics operations and repairs.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair work on engines and transmissions.
- Cleaning, rebuilding and replacing generators, motors and distributors.
- Repairs and replaces springs, shock absorbers and other suspension mechanisms.
- Repair tires and tubes.
- Pre-maintenance schedule on all equipment. Updates and maintains file records. Use computer diagnostics and scanner, perform repairs as needed.
- Minor body repair work. Painting of equipment (must have knowledge of spray-painting equipment)
- General A/C repairs and system charging.
- Welding experience required.
- Plans, schedules and participates in vehicle and equipment maintenance assignments
- Sets priorities for section personnel on work assignments involving vehicle maintenance, repair
- Prepares work plans and schedules
- Coordinates computerized system to track vehicles and equipment
- Work orders, time and materials, and prepare periodic charge-back reports
- Prepares periodic reports and summaries
- Directs and participates in the maintenance of records of work activities
- Assists in the preparation of the department budget
- Prepares and submits budgets for assigned division and program areas
- Monitors budget expenditures
- Prepares costs estimates for maintenance, repair and program activities
- Evaluates equipment for purchase and assists in the development of specifications
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor/mechanic
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the principals, practice and methods of vehicle and equipment management, applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations, including safety regulations and procedure, tools and equipment associates with vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair, business mathematics, design drawing and specifications, effective methods of record keeping and inventory control, computerized maintenance management systems, training and employee development programs, report writing. Ability to plan, organize, direct and schedule; evaluate alternatives and make sound decisions and recommendations; present clear and concise oral and written reports; interpret and apply pertinent provisions of the Park District’s rules and regulations, policies and other laws related to human resources administration; plan, prioritize and direct divisional programs; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Exercise good judgment and make appropriate decisions; learn and use a variety of computer software applications related to the work. Prepare periodic and special reports and correspondence related to the work of the division. Perform vehicle and equipment repair and testing.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent and technical training and/or certification in vehicle repair. Five years working experience in journeyman level as a mechanic performing vehicle and equipment repairs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand for long periods of time, climb, stoop, squat, and bend to diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment. Discern colors, work effectively with all levels of staff; develop and maintain records and automated systems for tracking and monitoring work and inventories.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess an Illinois CDL Class license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to grip, clasp, hold and carry necessary tools and equipment that are an essential part of the job. Must be able to comprehend and process repair and safety manuals on equipment, drawings and descriptions of the equipment and its operation that are essential parts of the job. Must be able to ambulate in such ways that permit the successful completion of projects that are an essential part of the job.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Joliet Park District strives to maintain a safe work environment. As such, all tools, equipment and safety devices will be or are provided to the employee. Employee may be required to work at various job sites, performing necessary repair work as is dictated by the situation.
