Position: Paraprofessional/Teacher Assistant

Salary: Starting at $15.00-$20.23/Per Hour, Based on Education & Experience

About Our Facility: JTC Academy was developed out of an intense need for programming that combines academics with therapeutic programming for youth having mental and acute behavioral health challenges that have often manifested into unmanageable, destructive and highly inappropriate behaviors. As a result, youth are often suspended or expelled, inappropriately placed, or placed in programs that only meet part of the youth’s needs. Research and statistics indicate that when youth experience these types of experiences eventually culminating a life of hopelessness, starting with drop out or falling through the cracks, and leading to a bleak future, a cycle of failure, and homelessness and substance abuse.

Professional Requirements:

60 College Credit Hours/Bachelor’s Degree Preferred

Illinois Paraprofessional License

Experience working with emotionally and behaviorally challenged students

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Technology Competency Test

Three Professional References

Voicemail, Microsoft word/office, printer, texting, copier, calculator, scanner

Position Summary:

A paraprofessional works to assist a teacher throughout their daily classroom activities. Some of the duties include helping schedule and implement programs in accordance with the curriculum as well as special education classroom and clerical duties such as maintaining a clean and safe environment or printing and preparing educational material.

Working Conditions:

• Physical Effort: Mental/visual stress related to viewing of computer screens and printed material for prolonged periods. Lifting limited to a box of forms weighing 7-8 pounds. Prolonged periods of sitting. May experience stress related to productivity requirements.

• Work Environment: Normal office environment with limited exposure to health or accident hazards. Note: We are a therapeutic residential treatment facility and at times, it can be noisy and stressful. This position has no interactions with youth.

• Equipment Used: Computer, telephone, printer, calculator, fax machine, and copy reproduction equipment

• At JTC, we have a positive, family oriented working approach while treating each other with respect.

Physical Elements Required:

• Lifting and carrying 5-7 pounds, be without physical limitation that would impair ability to fulfill the functions of the position. Must have sufficient mobility, physical stamina to travel all over facility and to participate in a therapeutic crisis intervention full, prone restraint.

• Frequent bending, stooping kneeling, and reaching, stretching;

• Standing for long periods of time;

• Work requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors

Mental Performing Elements:

• Must be without emotional limitations that would impair ability to fulfill the functions of this job including freedom from substance abuse.

• Organizing and coordinating schedules and events in an organized manner

• Ability to maintain a calm demeanor

• Ability to work within a closed environment

• Ability to focus and maintain decorum

Associated Risks Involved:

Please note this position is in a school facility for troubled youth. There is always a possibility for injury due to restraints, running after youth, breaking up fights or other issues that staff encounter daily in their efforts made to keep youth from hurting themselves or others. I further understand that while these events may be going on or I am in the pathway of a student outburst or violent act, there is the potential for injury. I therefore understand that if asked, I will be required to provide medical evidence that I am capable of performing my duties in above said environment.
