It encompasses three other major components, all open to the community—a speech and language therapy program, an evaluation center, and a teacher-training program. Shelton is actively involved with research and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children’s Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center. The Shelton School is a co-educational, non-sectarian school that serves approximately 900 students with learning differences in grades EC to 12. The Shelton School is accredited by Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS).

Purpose:
The Director of Campus Safety & Security is in charge of all safety, security and emergency management needs for the school. To include implementing and designing all campus safety and security policies and procedures, coordinating Security Guards and Dallas Police Officers ensuring that Shelton is a safe place for students, faculty, staff, visitors, parents, and alumni. They also act as the head of the Emergency Management Team, coordinating all emergency drills, lockdown and evaluation procedures as well as reunification plans.

Qualifications & Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
  • Peace Officer’s Certification (TCOLE) preferred.
  • General knowledge of police work with a minimum of five years’ combined experience in law enforcement, security and/or emergency management with at least two years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience working in an educational environment, preferably a K-12 school.
  • Ability to work occasional prolonged and irregular hours and available as needed in a 24 hour operation.
  • Has or is able to obtain a Texas DPS PSB Qualified Manager License within 60 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, supervise, and evaluate all safety and security related functions.
  • Experience in creation and management of an Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and operating expenses.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; specifically for addressing potential conflicts and deescalating potential threats.
  • Requires successful completion of employment background screening and verification and drug test and requires valid state driver license.
  • Ability to take charge while responding professionally and calmly in emergency situations
  • Ability to analyze security and safety risks and make appropriate recommendations within a school setting
  • Effective communication skills to express ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, students, parents, school administration and local law enforcement representatives.
  • Ability to formulate campus wide policies.
  • Ability to manage multiple functions, activities, and projects; prioritize duties to ensure timely completion
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment;
  • Microsoft Office experience preferred including strong Excel skills
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of the organization; an inquisitive mindset and ability to assess and initiate things independently.
Essential Functions:
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential to the successful performance of this job
  • Leads in the creation of an environment that aligns best safety and security practices with constituent advocacy.
  • Manage the Police and Security Teams to ensure the effective and continuous oversight of 24-hour safety and security of the campus.
  • Maintains annual department budget to ensure all expenditures are necessary and well planned.
  • Processes invoices, and oversees both large and small capital projects.
  • Performs employee performance evaluations and goal setting.
  • Is a visible and integral part of the school community, fostering rapport and mutual respect.
Safety & Security:
  • Coordinates Campus Security Officers and Dallas Police Officers on Campus.
  • Works directly with the security contractor and Police Officer coordinator.
  • Determines and monitors Campus Security Officer shifts, patrols, and procedures and evaluates each officer's performance.
  • Manages the Campus Security equipment to make sure it is appropriate, up to date, and functional.
  • Meets with outside organizations (Fire Department, Police Department, etc.) to assess the safety of the campuses.
  • Possess working knowledge of the fire and security systems.
  • Develop and lead the Emergency Management Team.
  • Investigates and reports incidents on campus to administration.
  • Works with Human Resources to support personnel related investigations and terminations.
  • Oversees departmental radio, CCTV, fire and RFID systems.
  • Manages staff, volunteer and temporary badge activation/deactivation and distribution.
  • Designs, schedules and coordinates Campus Safety Drills in conjunction with appropriate school personnel.
  • Works closely with the Director of IT on all technology related equipment and emergency management systems.
  • Coordinates and conducts security and safety inspections of all facilities and equipment.
  • Coordinates and serves as a liaison with other schools, public safety officials, law enforcement, and other stakeholders in matters related to school safety.
  • Must be available to work different shifts on occasion as the need arises.
Risk Management
  • Proactively assesses risk campus wide and develops methods and policies for reducing personal safety and security risks of students, clients and personnel.
  • Researches and develops Campus Safety & Security Policies and Emergency Procedures in conjunction with the Administrative Team.
  • Communicates policy to all constituents (faculty, staff, students, parents).
  • Facilitates training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Manages coordination of volunteer clearance and background checks.
  • Continually monitors policies to incorporate the latest best practices.
  • Ensure coverage for evening and weekend special events as needed.
  • Coordinates carpool and campus parking.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
