Description:

KPWHRI seeks one or more doctorate-level scientists to join our faculty as Senior investigators (equivalent to Full Professor). We welcome applications from candidates who are nationally recognized for research in one or more of the following areas: health equity, improving primary care practice, mental health, pharmacoepidemiology, or vaccines and infectious disease. Successful candidates will lead an independent research program and collaborate with our local and national research partners, including the University of Washington and the Health Care Systems Research Network. Develop, lead and execute an independent program of research and evaluation resulting in national and international recognition for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute (KPWHRI). Advise Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington and national policy makers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a programmatic, independent research portfolio as a Principal Investigator (PI). This also includes planning, initiating, and conducting complex and innovative scientific research and evaluation studies; and securing sufficient extramural funding to sustain these programs.
  • Provide high-level leadership to research team. This includes setting the vision and agenda for multiple complex and innovative research studies and providing senior leadership to the research team based on ones scientific expertise. Also includes clearly communicating with team members and other staff to implement project activities; being knowledgeable about and compliant with applicable organizational, federal and other regulatory practices and policies; serving as a content expert on junior colleagues studies; and effectively leading project teams when serving as PI.
  • Analyze, interpret, and disseminate research findings to KPWHRI, KFHPW, and the broader scientific community through publications, national and international presentations at scientific meetings, and other appropriate forums. Increasingly serve as senior author/presenter, supporting junior colleagues work.
  • Provide mentoring to staff and junior scientists at KPWHRI.
  • Participate in service at KPWHRI (e.g., serving on committees, mentoring), in the local scientific community, and on a national or international level (e.g., serving on committees of professional societies, serving on study sections for peer review, etc.).
  • Participate in scientific planning and activities to support the growth and success of KPWHRI.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience as an Associate Investigator or similar academic research position (e.g., Associate Professor).
  • Forty (40) peer-reviewed scientific paper with at least ten (10) as first author, including published and in-press manuscripts.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience mentoring junior colleagues (e.g., students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or research staff) as a primary or secondary mentor.

Education

  • Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DrPH, ScD) in health care relevant field, including but not limited to medicine, epidemiology, behavioral science, and health services.

License, Certification, Registration

  • N/A

Additional Requirements:

  • Familiarity with appropriate external funding sources and regulatory requirements for individuals field of research.
  • Evidence of continuous research funding in a programmatic area as evidenced by being Principal investigator (PI) on at least two (2) or more major, extramural grants (e.g., NIH R01 or equivalent) or contracts.
  • Evidence of a national and international reputation for ones scientific program, as demonstrated by a combination of: publication in moderate/high impact scientific journals, national level service (e.g., scientific peer reviewer, service to professional societies), invited talks as lead presenter at national and international scientific conferences, and the peer review of senior scientists. Content expertise in ones scientific field, including sophisticated knowledge of research design and methods.
  • Service contributions as an Associate-level Investigator in the local research community and at the national level. Local service includes, but is not limited to, activities such as serving on internal administrative committees, faculty search committees, student selection committees, student thesis or dissertation committees, or teaching. National service includes, but is not limited to, activities such as acting as a peer reviewer for journals and grant funding agencies or serving on high-profile committees and advisory boards with professional organizations and/or external research funding agencies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to collaborate with a diverse group of colleagues.
  • Ability to effectively manage a programmatic body of research. This includes the ability to successfully lead multi-disciplinary research teams, build consensus and cohesion within teams, meet project milestones, manage project budgets, execute on deliverables, and remain compliant with applicable regulations.
  • Ability to embody KPWHRI organizational values, including but not limited to: integrity, service, respect, courage, learning, justice, and joy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six (6) years of experience as an Associate Investigator or equivalent mid-career independent scientist role (e.g., Associate Professor) at time of hire.
  • Fifty (50) peer-reviewed scientific publications with at least fifteen (15) as first author.
  • Six (6) or more years of experience mentoring junior colleagues (e.g., students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or research staff) as a primary or secondary mentor.
  • Experience serving on one or more investigators mentoring committees as an associate level scientist.
