Position Summary:
The Director of Systemic Change Initiatives will enhance the Kalamazoo Community Foundation’s Initiatives and Public Policy vision and strategy by working collaboratively with the Vice President of Initiatives and Public Policy and the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Kalamazoo Leadership Team to build and strengthen collaborative partnerships and infrastructure locally to advance existing efforts in Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation framework areas, specifically, Separation, Law, and Economy.
This position works in shared leadership with the Director of Racial Healing Initiatives to manage community-led collaboration—that is cross-racial, intergenerational, and cross-sector—to move Kalamazoo County towards healing and actionable change.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Design Team Development, Capacity Building, and Management
Design Teams are local coalitions dedicated to moving Kalamazoo County towards systemic change in the TRHT framework areas of Separation (Education, Housing, Public Health), Law, and Economy. These teams are comprised of representatives of partner organizations and individual partners who work collaboratively to co-design work plans that move Kalamazoo County towards being the most equitable place to live.
This role will lead systemic change initiatives with equitable and just practices and collaborate with contractors and staff in the TRHT Framework areas. Across all Design Teams, with support from the IPP Coordinator, work with coalition partners to develop opportunities for community engagement that lead to transformation of systems.
  • Serve as key liaison for Design Team contractors and teams to expand existing efforts in lifting community voice, developing and executing relevant projects and events, and driving the yearly workplan forward so key deliverables are completed.
  • Develop key partnerships across the community and state to support systems. change efforts and evaluate the need for further partnership and/or expansion.
  • Collaborate with the IPP public policy lead to evaluate design team policy goals and develop strategic processes to achieve each goal.
  • Develop deep knowledge and understanding of local community issues and trends in framework areas, which may include research and evaluation of relevant community data or attending training.
  • Represent KZCF in community, statewide, and national coalitions and conversations and look for opportunities to collaborate on projects, bring attention to work in assigned initiative areas, and engage new community partners and build design team membership.
  • Develop processes that establish group norms and working agreements within the collaborative to further accountability, trust, mutual respect, and commitment.
Leadership
  • In close partnership with the VP of Initiatives and Public Policy and IPP Team, serve as a key lead of developing, aligning, and implementing the strategic direction of systemic change initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with internal partners to identify opportunities to communicate and leverage the Community Foundation’s resources to the broader community efforts towards racial equity, racial healing, and transformation.
  • Provide leadership and support (including planning for training & skill-building as needed) to strengthen the nonprofit sector and core initiative partners.
  • Collaborate with IPP staff to ensure TRHT leadership team has effective meetings and decision-making processes (facilitated, supported, focused).
  • In partnership with KZCF marketing communications team, develop communications projects by overseeing the delegation of content, products and positioning related to the TRHT Framework Areas.
  • Assist the evaluation team in connecting with any internal and external teams for information relevant to initiative, program, and/or project evaluation.
Fiscal Responsibility
  • Support fund development efforts as assigned by the VP of IPP, including grant application writing and grant reporting to external funders.
  • Work with Donor Relations team representative to set goals and engage with donors to grow the TRHT endowment.
  • Work closely with Director of Racial Healing Initiatives to develop and monitor the annual budget for systemic change initiatives, including contracts, invoices, revenues, work plans, and cross-organizational expenses.
  • Facilitate and negotiate clarity in roles and responsibilities with external partners, document this clarity through MOUs, contracts, and charters as needed while supporting partners in the execution of contract management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Required:
  • BS/BA in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and relevant experience
  • Rich experience in one or more TRHT framework area (Separation- Education, Housing, or Public Health, Law, and Economy) and interest in learning about the others.
  • Deep understanding of racial equity, structural racism, intersectionality, and the social determinants of health.
  • Prior experience in advocacy, organizing, and program development.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead through change, working in partnership with stakeholders to translate a vision into clearly defined priorities and results.
  • Organizational skills combined with the ability to bring intellectual rigor, clarity, and data to decision-making processes.
  • Ability to manage complex projects with competing deadlines.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen and ability to write grants and manage budgets and forecast effectively.
