Freelance: Model Maker & Painter

Kaleidoscope is looking for talented freelancers to work in our model shop and paint department:

• Model making: Fabricating conventional prototype models from sketches and or CAD drawings using wide variety of stock materials, wood, plastics and processes; Wood working, sculpting, 3D printing, thermo-forming and machining.
• Finishing: Much of the work needed is hand sanding model parts in preparation for painting.
• Paint Room Assistant: Custom mixing colors and spray gun painting.
• Mold and Casting: Create silicone rubber molds and cast urethane parts.
• 3D Printing: Preparing files for printing; set up and finishing of printed parts.

All freelancers must be able to work on-site at our Chicago office and be available during normal hours of business typically from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. This is a freelance opportunity and work is intermittent depending on our work load. This is not a full-time position. No overtime or benefits will be offered. Required Skills/Abilities:

• Background in fine art painting or related arts field, highly desirable.
  
• Basic wood shop training or shop experience.
• Solid understanding of color theory and a great eye for judging color. You must demonstrate the ability to accurately match solvent base paints to client samples and PMS printing swatch books.
• Comfortable working in a clean paint room and model shop environment.
• You are required to wear personal protective equipment when painting, which we will provide to use on-site. This includes eye wear, gloves, smock, and a paint respirator.
• Extremely organized, self-motivated, resourceful and accountable to complete projects correctly and within the time budgeted.
• Strong attention to fine detail work and strive to achieve a high level of craftsmanship with all projects.
• Experience in collaborating and communicating across departments including model makers, project and account managers, designers, and clients.
