What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mentor/Coach position at KAMS Foundation, Inc.?
Responsibilities:
Mentor/Team Coaches are paid minimum wage or greater and require attendance at a minimum of 80% of any given Youth Empowerment Program; as well as attendance at our fundraisers and training sessions. .KAMS Foundation executes a Youth Empowerment Program through existing after school venues. During this program we focus on our 4 Core Values:
Affirmation
Mentorship
Character Development
Life Skills
Through these Core Values we aim to inspire and empower youth to excel in the game of life.
We use sports, teambuilding activities, affirmation activities, life skill activities, dream casting and vision board activities to teach and empower the youth with our core values.
When using sports you do not have to have any experience in the sport; as it is not about the sport itself. The sport is the vehicle we use to teach through. We use soccer, basketball, flag football, and volleyball.
Currently our programs have two structures:
Weekly program runs 1 week at a time (2 days a week) and the timeframe is approximately 3:20-5:30PM.
The Summer Camp program runs twice a week, usually in the morning hours at various locations.3-4 hours a day.
Currently all locations are within Chino, Chino Hills, Ontario, and Pomona. We are expanding into other areas at this time.
MENTOR/TEAM COACH entails:
- working on the field (sports field-soccer, basketball, beach blanket volleyball, flag football etc) and on other experiential learning activities, team building activities and affirmation activities as a "Mentor/Team Coach”. Sports experience is NOT NECESSARY. These are the vehicles we use to teach our Core Values.
- The Mentor/Team Coaches additional responsibilities include affirming, mentoring and encouraging the youth.
- Watching for character development traits and life skills to be demonstrated on the field and/or during the experiential learning activities and communicating these "catches" in a series of huddles throughout the timeframe of the program. Also during huddles the TEAM COACH will ask the youth to share their observations of what they saw in the area of “character traits/life skills” on the field and then to APPLY these characteristics/skills in other venues (i.e. home, school, neighborhood, etc).
- leave the youth with an “Accountability Challenge” – something they go and do before the next time you meet to execute on the Character Trait or Life Skill that has been emphasized that day/week
-Set up and tear down the equipment/supplies for sports/activities.
-Manage the youth on their team

- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Knowledge of conflict management techniques and the ability to navigate difficult situations
- Familiarity with working with children or young adults is preferred
