What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Staff Auditor position at Kane County Auditor?

JOB SUMMARY:

This is a temporary assignment with the potential to hire, hourly position. The typical schedule is 35 hours per week. The schedule will be subject to change.

This is a mid-level position responsible for both certain administrative duties and various internal audit assignments under the supervision of the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor. The nature of this position requires contact with all levels of County employees and officials, as well as contact with outside vendors, external auditors and other agencies and representatives related to County business.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Review of countywide accounts payable and payroll processing to ensure proper documentation, authorization and accuracy.

2. Prepare expense vouchers and review reimbursements for proper authorizations and compliance with County financial policy.

3. Perform special projects at the direction of the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor to ensure that the Office runs efficiently.

INTERNAL AUDITING DUTIES

1. Provide assistance

a. Planning subject and scope on audits, or segments of the audits, assigned by the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor.

b. Determining records or activities to analyze, the extent of tests to apply, and the working papers to prepare.

c. Recommending the means of obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating evidentiary data.

d. Conducting preliminary discussions of apparent internal control deficiencies and/or financial discrepancies with County employees and officials to verify and to obtain explanations for each apparent deficiency or discrepancy.

2. Responsible for

a. Reviewing internal control systems, transactions, documents, records, reports, and methods for accuracy and effectiveness of internal controls.

b. Preparing appropriate working papers that record and summarize data on the assigned audit or audit segment.

c. Reporting audit findings to the County Auditor and Chief Deputy Auditor on the results of the review of the assigned audit or audit segment and making recommendations for the correction of unsatisfactory conditions, improvements in internal controls, and reductions in cost.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with various special projects at the request of the County Auditor or Chief Deputy Auditor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college is preferred.

2. Experience in auditing and/or internal auditing is required.

3. Credentials as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) of Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) are not required, but may be preferred.

4. Excellent analytical skills, the ability to write detailed reports of audit findings and core competency with Microsoft Office products is required.

5. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated and detail-oriented team player with outstanding communications skills.

Reports to: Kane County Auditor and/or Kane County Deputy Auditor
