To effectively work and communicate with language minority students, their parents and school personnel.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide individualized and small group tutoring to target students to reinforce and or support skills being taught by the classroom or ESL teacher.
  • Follow instructional plans as provided by ESL or classroom teacher.
  • Familiarize and reinforce students with Code of Conduct, school rules and classroom rules.
  • Provide support to target students as they adjust and adapt to the mainstream classroom environment.
  • Assist in the selection, development and implementation of culturally sensitive materials and programs that foster multicultural understanding among all students and staff.
  • Attend in-service training session as needed to acquire the necessary skills to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Translate, provide information about parental involvement activities, and assist target families and staff in workshop activities sponsored by the district.
  • Assist in assessment of students in the native language when necessary.
  • Any other duties related to the instructional needs of the target population.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Have a high school diploma or a GED certificate and

  • Complete 48 hours at an institution of higher education OR
  • Obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree OR
  • Pass a State approved assessment. Approved assessments include: Workkeys, ParaPro, or Para Educator

Job related experience preferred

Bilingual preferred, must demonstrate fluency (speaking, comprehension, reading and writing)


PREFERRED

Sixty (60) college credit hours in the area of ESL, Education, Language Arts, Foreign Languages or related fields.

Experience working in an educational setting or service oriented agency that deals with language minority students.


COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 186 days

SALARY: $16.76 - $20.06/hour

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT, HOURLY

REPORT TO: ESL teacher and building principal.

EVALUATION: Based on Board of Education Policies and Procedures
