Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Provides detailed industrial control system drawings and factory test panels for proper functionality.
  • Designs work including electrical schematics, power circuit and control circuit sizing and loading, SCCR calculations, thermal Calculations for control panels, and control panel interior & exterior design and layouts.
  • Follows Kasa design & sizing procedures as well as NEC (NFPA 70) and UL508A requirements and any other project specific code requirements.
  • Yellow lines electrical schematics to Q.C. or review the content and design. Assist with and perform formal electrical drawing Q.C. and procedure.
  • Follows document control procedures for revisions, submittals, and Kasa design process flow.
  • Writes, enters and documents PLC programs and HMI programs.
  • Industrial network configuration and setup for different communication protocols.
  • Debugs and tests control systems at the customer's facility (start-up/stand-by)
  • Understands various PLC ladder logic and HMI programming systems.
  • Orders parts as required.
  • Works alone or with project team and communicate well with the project lead and or project manager.
  • Writes operations manuals, user manuals, O&M manuals, etc.
  • Design, produce, and install lockout placards
  • Calculate arc-flash using the IEEE methodology for provided electrical equipment, order and install labelling as required.
  • Develops checkout and validation forms for Factory Acceptance tests and on-site commissioning and all required documentation on projects per the Kasa Process Manual.
  • On-site startup and commissioning of systems. May involve 10 to 20 hour shifts per day as required to meet specific start-up schedules
  • Turns in all required Kasa paper work each week when in the field or on start-up.
  • Assists with shop control panel Q.C. procedures when needed.
  • Attends and actively participates in project meetings.
  • Basic level of understanding of UL508A for industrial control panels
  • Understands and follows Kasa Engineering Process Manual procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring the quality of goods and services to both internal and external customers.
  • Responsible for hardware and software design for most all control and/or instrumentation systems, or advanced software applications using state of the art programming techniques for control systems data handling and graphic displays.
  • Manages small jobs, typically requiring a single engineer.
  • Effectively engages with customers as needed on projects.
  • Ability to commission a system without assistance.
  • Develops data structures, program efficiencies, upper level programming for system control, monitoring and status displays.
  • Reads a Scope of Work for a system and has an understanding of what is required or be willing and able to ask logical questions of the lead to get clarification.
  • Understanding and ability to interpret APIS reports.
  • Creates parameter files for DeviceNet Cards, VFDs, ArmorStarts, and other devices as applicable.
  • Has a working knowledge of all relevant communication protocols such as Ethernet IP, Modbus, ProfiBus, ProfiNet, etc., pertinent to the industry work they are working on.


Leadership


  • In charge of the technical and design execution of the project.
  • May assign or delegate work to project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing.
  • Responsible for all delegated work and verify designs of all delegated work.
  • Track and be able to report out to management personnel on status of all work flow and who is where on work.
  • Participates in detailed design as needed.
  • Works with the customer on design details for the project, reports discrepancies to the project manager.
  • Reviews all engineering and designs for compliance with engineering principals, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
  • Ensures that the information, such as drawings, programs, HMI screens, documentation and bills of materials are accurate and complete before delivery to Project Manager or his designee for distribution to purchasing, production or customers.
  • Establishes and maintains communications with customers and/or end users to ensure that system design is following system requirements.
  • Responsible for following work orders and procedures as determined by the Quality Managements Systems standards for ISO 9001
  • Reads a Scope of Work and compares it to quote so they can understand what was quoted vs. what was purchased. When major discrepancies are discovered the PE should know to bring this to the attention of the PM.
  • Directly and appropriately communicates with the customer, end user, project team, etc.
  • Maintain project scope of work and watch out for project creep or doing work beyond the project scope that we should be getting paid to do.

Supervisory Responsibilities


  • Attends all required contractor or customer meetings to represent Kasa and reports out on issues and concerns.


Training Required


  • Completes Industrial safety & lock out/tag out.
  • Completes company LEAN training and participates in Kaizen events as needed.
  • Understands Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements and how it applies to this position as determined by ISO 9001 and to facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Completes Kasa Process Manual training
  • Completes UL508A Level 1 training.
  • Completes UL508A level 2 training


Education & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from four-year college or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years controls engineer experience preferred.
  • PLC hardware and programming experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in the conveyor, material handling or related industries desired.
  • Experience with GuardLogix or PanelView desired.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook required.
  • High School diploma/GED required.

Work Environment


This position operates in an office and job site setting. It routinely requires using standard office equipment, such as computer, phones, copiers, fax machines etc. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm, but are project work dependent. Occasional evenings and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Travel is required. Start-ups or job site setting hours will vary based on project and location. Field hours can vary from 10 to 20 hours per day in addition for the need to work weekends and 7 or more days in a row depending on specific start-up schedules on projects and customer demands, which can vary. Customer interaction is required. Frequently, startup situations become very stressful under deadlines to meet a customer’s schedule or to overcome a situation where our customer may not be satisfied with progress or performance that is out of our control. Engineers are expected to handle these situations in a calm and helpful manner.


Physical Demands


Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to occasionally climb permanent and temporary stairs, climb ladders, negotiate work areas under construction, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally requires use of construction personnel hoists. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Performing this job regularly requires use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects in pocket, tools, or controls, sit, talk, hear, stand. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weight. Employee must be capable of using tools, and able to help install equipment and make adjustments/modifications to that equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works on-site at the construction worksite where the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise in this work environment can be moderate to very loud.
