What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Research Technician I position at Katmai?
SUMMARY
The Animal Research Technician I provides animal laboratory research technician support services as related to the Combat Casualty Care mission. The Animal Research Technician I provides research support services for protocols, primarily animal protocols using large animal (porcine) models.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provide laboratory and animal research support to CRT6 research staff and clinicians.
* Follow written standard operating procedures (SOPs) to support CRT6 research projects.
* Assist in developing project materials using engineering and technology principles.
* Assist with animal protocols to include operating the study devices and related equipment.
* Collect/record/analyze data and maintain detailed records of protocols and benchtop experiments.
* Provide sterile surgical and post-surgical care for large animals.
* Recognize pain/distress in animals and take appropriate measures, as provided during USAISR-directed training, to alleviate/mitigate the symptoms. Mitigation efforts include increased monitoring and providing analgesics. Veterinary services assistance should be sought if the initial efforts are not successful, or conditions do not improve.
* Assist in the necropsy/tissue collection/tissue preservation/carcass disposal of experimental animals.
* Collect data from animal research subjects using advanced imaging systems/ physiologic monitoring systems.
* Clean and sterilize all instruments/equipment in the surgery area.
* Maintain all required materials and supplies in the laboratory, surgery and storage areas.
* Submit purchase requests for approval by a government official.
* Learn new methods/techniques as required.
* Enter/organize data collected during protocols utilizing Excel spreadsheets.
* Generate data for inclusion in study presentations and publications.
* Perform basic statistical computations of "raw data" (e.g., mean, standard deviation, standard error, and analysis of variance).
* Assist with regulatory compliance reviews and technical reports.
* Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Must have large animal study experience with minimum of three or more (3 ) years on biomedical research projects.
* Local background investigation by the USAISR Security Office is required, must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks (U.S. Citizenship required).
* Required Certifications (certifications must be completed within 6 months of employment):
o DoD 8570.01 M IAT Level II Baseline Certification Required such as (Security CE or equivalent as specified in DoD 8570.01 M) as well as a Computing Environment certification.
DESIRED QUALIFICAITONS & SKILLS
* Experience with large animal studies and a familiarity with biomedical engineering research is preferred.
* Bachelor's degree in related field is preferred.
* Data analysis experience is preferred.
* Experience with large animal experiments, requiring familiarity of animal research protocol.
* Ability to coordinate multiple projects and initiatives at one time.
* Strong written communication skills and a solid understanding of Government contracting and the professional services industry.
* Expert computer skills with advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite software.
* Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
* Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
* Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality.
* Proven ability to exercise mature judgment - specifically in recognizing and respecting the confidential nature of corporate and personnel matters.

WORK SCHEDULE
40 hours per week. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.
TRAVEL
Potential for travel. When required, employee will need to complete an MVR check.
DRIVING REQUIREMENT
Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver's license and be insurable on the company's automobile insurance policy.
Driving may be required when traveling and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 5%.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an office or lab setting, but hospital/clinic visits are possible. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities and abilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, or to be or remain in a position or state of inactivity. Occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
- Pay is $60,000 to $70,000 per year.
