We are looking for passionate and caring Family Nurse Practitioner to join our team of skilled professionals and provide health care services to our veterans and their families at the United States Air Force Academy.

***Short Term Position Starting May 5th 2024 - August 5th 2024***

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The scope of privileges for family nurse practitioners includes the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, disposition, and referral for patients of all ages with acute and chronic symptoms, illnesses, injuries, or conditions. FNPs provide education on health, well-being, management and prevention of disease. FNPs assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions in accordance with medical staff policy.
  • Provide a full range of nurse practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the Privileging Authority (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).
  • Works under general supervision of the Chief, who discusses policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
  • Prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Participates in established peer (other medical specialist) review process monthly. Provides chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of neurology if requested on an occasional basis.
  • Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.
  • Provide a full range of nurse practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated).
  • Treat patients with common acute conditions, illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols, Nurse Practice Acts, and/or in collaboration with a physician.
  • Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the physician in the health care of patients with chronic illnesses.
  • May become the primary care manager for a panel of patients. As a PCM, will be the primary person responsible for the management of the health and wellness of assigned patients.
  • Request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
  • Prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Promote preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
  • Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
  • Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
  • Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
  • Ability to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, disease process and procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patients’ condition, including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care.
  • Maintains knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
  • Maintains knowledge of operating and monitoring specialized medical equipment such as IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring devices, EKG units, oxygen analyzers, nebulizers, and other unit specific equipment.
  • Participates in the orientation of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
  • Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed.
  • Provides relevant and timely information to these groups and assists with decision-making and process improvement.
  • Participates in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
  • Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Successfully completed Master of Science in Nursing degree program with specialization as a family nurse practitioner accredited by a national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • National Certification: Maintains a current national certification in specialty (i.e., certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center [ANCC] or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners [AANP]).
  • Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted RN license as well being licensed to the Advanced Practice level IAW the US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) requirements of their currently held RN license to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty. Non-personal services contract personnel must be licensed in the jurisdiction in which the MTF is located.
  • Experience/Clinical Competency: Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency in an outpatient family medicine setting. Must have the level of experience and documented current clinical competency to be awarded “Regular” privileges to work independently.
  • Advanced Life Support Certifications: Must possess and maintains current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support from the American Red Cross.
  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required documents, certifications, licenses, etc. listed on the credentialling checklist, sent by Katmai’s Credentialing Specialist, for this position for initial hire.
